The Crops.—We have had an opportunity to make a personal inspection of several fields of Wheat in the Wabash Valley, and are happy to say that notwithstanding the loud complaints lately uttered, we have been unable to find any cause for fear of short crops. In Warren Co., this State, we saw fields of Wheat, equal to the best we have seen in former years. In only one field out of some twenty or thirty, did we find any traces of the late frosts. On the contrary, the Wheat crop is larger in number of acres sown, than usual, very heavy on the gvound, with fine large well filled heads, and if nothing occurs to injure it hereafter, the yield will be far above an average one.
The same report is made of the crops in other counties and sections of this «nd the adjoining States.
S5T The steamer Fashion, while on her way from Louisville to St. Louis, run against the Indiana bank of the river, at Gen. Lanes old farm, and immediately sunk. No lives were lost, freight baggage and machinery saved. The officers says that she was runuing through a thick bank of fog at the time.
The new liquor law has knock
ed police reports into a ''cocked hat." Not a single item is to be obtained now pn account of Joiifc BARLEYCORN.— State Sentinel.
The above, is a frank admission by the Sjate organ, that the "Liquor Law" is effective and does its work from the commencement of its operations. The same is the case here, as Marshal Dodson, says he has not had oec&sion to take any one to the "City Hotel" for three or four days.

Abducting an American Child A letter-writer at Rome gives the following instance of religiout child* stealing. "A clay or two since, a lad, the son of an American artist—the well-known illustrator of Harper's Illustrated Bible —was missing. The domestic, a most devout Catholic, protested her innocence of his whereabouts. The lad's little brother was called, and in his innocence, remarked that ho guessed he was at the convent. The Storm.
The Chicogo Fai'orite says :—The schooner Experiment capsized on Friday night, near St. Joseph, to which place she was going after cargo. The vessel turned bottom upward, and Capt. Jennings, her master, and two sailors, named Levi Livingston and P. Batton, were washed overboard and lost. The wife of Capt. N. W. Napier his son about fourteen years old, another child about a year old, and a sailor named Brosser, were in the cabin. The three persons managed to k&p their heads above water in the cabit^by clinging to the berths, but the child was drowned.
They were in this situation sixteen hours, duting which time the vessel drifted ashore near St. Joseph, and Capt. Scott, of the schooner Sutherland, with others, went to the wreck, and hearing voices in it, cut a hole through the planking and rescued the survivors.

England's War.
It is not of scenes of the war in the Crimea, which is upon every tongue, that I propose to notice, but to look into history in regard to some of her"past Wars for the purpose of showi"g the expense that her nobles and lords have thrust upon her subjects through the suggestions of Combativeness, DestructivenesB, Acquisitiveness and Self-Es-teeni. The consequence of which was the payment of nearly tnirty millions of taxes annu-.lly as the price of their gratification. And still they go to the

sum of £1,159,000,000, of which £771,000,000 were raised by taxes, and £388,000,000 by loans. They borrowed in the seven wars about £034,000,000. Raised by taxes for the same £1,189,000,000 thus making the total expenditure in 65 years of war £2,023,000,000 or £10,115,000.000
These dates and expenditures are from England's own historian, however startling may be their amount to an Americ.in—to a philanthropist—to all lovers of good. But who can believe that these wars were essential to the national prosperity? or who can estimate the amount of crime, of misery, of bloodshed and death, and of blighted hope and love, of devastated homes of the widow and fatherless, and sav, "it is finished?"
