GREAT FIRE IN ANN STREET! .. Destruction of Trow's Printing Office.
XJOIP &IOO,OOO.
About 9 o'clock last night afire broke ut in the second story of building No. 49 Ann street, occupied by John F. Trow, printer and book publisher. In the room at the time were several persons engaged in preparing copy for
Trow's New York City Directory." Owing to the large collection of paper and pther inflammable materials with which the apartment was filled, the flames spread rapidly, and those irt the building had the greatest difficulty in in escaping with their lives.
About twenty compositors, who were at Work in the upper or fourth story, were forced by the dense smoke to make their egress through the scuttle on the roof, and grope their way as best they could along the roofs to building No. 57, through which they forced an entranee, and succeeded, much exhausted, in reaching the street.
The Excitement near the buildings was of course intense. The compositors •and the other parsons at work in the fourth story, were forced to stuff handkerchiefs in their mouths, and adopt other means to effect their escape. One of the workmen was so much overcome by the smoke that his companions were obliged to drag him through tho scuttle tq the roof, and from thence to tho street. The poor fellow was so far gone as to require to be conveyed to his bome.
There' were, it is supposed, about forty persons in the building at tho breaking out of the fire, and it is quite probable that some of them may have been suffocated.
The new, and now the only City Directory, was being set up there, and was about half finished—of course all the labor thereon was entirely destroyed. A new canvass of the City will probably be rendered necessary, thereby delaying the issue of tho Directory, whioh circumstance will be a public loss.
Mr. Trow is secured for 844,000, which will more than cover his loss. The insurance is in numerous offices for sums ranging from $2,000 to 85,•000.
The Odd Fellows' Hall in Law-
Tenceburg is to be dedicated to-morrow.
