Virginia Election—The Result—Its Cause. It seems by the latest roturns from Virginia, that, contrary to our expectations,

We say in conclusion to our friends in Va., let not defeat dishearten you— nor make you relax your vigilence or zeal in the cause of reform. Keep close to the principles on which the American party was first organized, and victory, in the end, is sure.

S3F" Here is Preniice again it sounds like olden times, when to sinners, he was called the great executioner. He has kept a long truce but his Damascus blade is as keen and sharp as over, and he ahowa to all concerned, through Mr. AVickliffe, that ho is ready for war, .whilst he sues for peace

We see that Mr. Charles A. Wtckliffe abused us in a speech at Bardstown on Monday evening. We think he is a very silly old man to assail us after so long a truce. We apprehend that his intellect must be declining whilst all his bad passions are increasing with age.

Mr. WicUiffe calls us 'an abolitionist.' The charge is not only false but ungentlemanly. The truth is, Mr. W. never had any part of a gentleman in him except when he once bit off and swallowed a gentleman's ear.

Mr. W. says he would 'rather command a regiment of Irishmen than a regiment of Yankees.' We judge, from his exploit in that ear-business, that he is better fitted to lead a regiment of Cannibals than either.

old men would suffer us to forget old animosities.

amounts to«J00,000—the largest jver collected in tbe State.

From the Wellsburg(Va.) Her

ald,^ we have the result of the election in those two counties: Brook and Hancock. r? I

FJourney's majority is 1J0, Pendleton, for Congress, -552 Langfitt, for Representative, 169. They have newspapers, postoffices and schools in that region. These two counties were formerly, strongly democratic.

Messrs. Jamison & Terry, of the

"70 comer," are now selling flour at $8 75@9 25. Wo are truly glad that this firm is endeavoring to bring the prices of many articles down to liv ing rates. Such a move should be remembered. Give them a call.

JtJT Another large drove of cattle passed west yesterday. Beef ought to be clieapcr, in view of the immense herds that are swarming on our vast Western Prairies^

|A young American lady who became acquainted- with a Russian in Ital) was followed by liim to Marseilles. It seems that the police are not deaf to appeals which concern our coinmon nature for, by representing himself to be frightfully in love with the young lady, he was admitted into France. Tho police of Paris, less tender than they of Marseilles, would only allow him the time

ernor by from 6000 to 10,000 majority. The Old Liners in this city, as well as throughout the country, are rejoicing. Well, we regret that it is so, still, how- strictly necessary for tho performance ever, it has resulted in somo

nuptial ceremony. This took

at 2 o'clock. I may add, as a

election in this city. during the few short hours of her wedBeing the first check "Sam" has ded bliss. Such is the effect of war! met with, 'Us not strange that the hosts of the Old Liners should raise a shout But wait, gentlemen, "the eudisaot, yet." It was natural to suppose that, I in that part of tho state—where Mr. II. A. Wise,Jhimself, boasted that there was not a newspaper published in the whole district, ho would run well, but we see that in those districts where some light has dawned tipon the benighted nation, the chauge has been marked and greats Another thing that helped to elect Mr. Wise, is the vive voce method of voting in that State. So perfect is party drill and so completely are tho masses under the control of the leaders, that many dare not vote their sentiments. We have seen cases of the kind occur in that region, ourself, and know, what we speak.

The Markets.

In Cincinnati, May 29, Flour was dull at 89 provisiona quiet, 150 bbls. mess pork sold at 815 75@$1G.

In New York, May 29, Flour was unsettled—sales of 6000 bbls. good Ohio sold at 810 12@10 37, Southern firm at 811 50@ 11 87.

MONETARY.—Cincinnati,

May 29.—

The money market presented no new feature to-day, tho same inactivity which has been its characteristic for the last few weeks prevailed tho transactions consequently were few at about the same rates.

Eastern Exchange continues dull at The supply in the hands of dealers is accumulating. Southern is unchanged.— Columbian.

We understand the Catholics in Cincinnati, when they are initiated into the sag-nicht councils are sworn to support the present school law of Ohio without material alteration. Good—hope this is tho case in all sag-nicht lodges.— Ind. DUpaich.

A gentleman who came down on the cars yesterday, was taken back on suspicion of being concerned in the late robbery of the clerk's office at Peru, Miami County, a short time ago, an account of which we published at tho time. We underst?nd he went back willingly, and denied having any knowledge of tho matter whatever.—Dispatch.

Tho following extract is said to be found in one of Martin Luther's works: In Ttally there was a particular order of friars called Fratrcs Ignorentiw, that is Brethren of Ignorance, who took a solemn oath they would neither know, learn nor understand anything at all, but answer all things with a Xescio, "I Know. Nothing."

There are good many "friars" of that order in Italy now, in fact there are not many of any other. They may not be quite so free with tho "pass-word," but their other qualifications are well attested.

Strawberries are selling,in Mad

ison, at 15cts. per quart.—Cherries are selling at 20cts.

Indian Lecture.

Mr.

GKORGK

CorwAT, the Indian Chief of

the Chippewa Nation, has consented to denver a lecture at the Congregational Church, on Friday evening, on the History and Destiny of the Indians, and the Means of their I reservation. Mr. CorwAV, as a man of high educational and literary acquirements, an Author, a Poet and an Orator, has won for himself a very enviable reputation.

The 'Traditional History of the Chippewa Nation,' of which Mr. C. is the author, is a most interesting and elegantly written woik ami displays to a marked degree the peculiar talent indigenous to the mind of the aborigine of this country. In 1850 Mr. CorwAr wis a delegate in the 'World's Peace Congress' in Germany, and as such distinguished himself as an orator aud a scholar. In 1851 he became the editor of "Copwav's American IndiriL*?™ok'v newspaper published in the City of New 1 ork not, however, under very favorable or Profitable auspicies.
