The Chicago A Eastern Illinois railway will pass under the control of the Big Four, Feb 1. An immense volume of natural gas has been secured in an experimental well at Grand Junction, Col. At Akron, O., John McFarlin, superintendent of the Akron street railway, was mysteriou&ly murdered. Chief Harris, of the Cherokee nation, has withdrawn all opposition to the sale of $6,640,0:0 Cherokee bonds. The United States cruiser Mohican has received orders to sail from San Francisco for Honolulu on the 16th inst. Eight persons were killed by an explosion in the arsenal at Belgrade, due to the careless handling of cartridges. Tho Mayoralty contest in Chicago to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of Carter Harrison is becoming very animated. Prendergast, the assassin who killed Mayor Harrison, was placed on trial at Chicago, Wednesday, a jury having been secured. The Supreme Court of Missouri has decided that option dealing is gambling, and that such transactions, under the law, are absolutely void. Mrs. Zejla Nicolaus, who sued George Gould for $40,000 damages at New York, has sailed for Naples. She has abandoned the prosecution. Governor Rich, of Michigan, may call a special session of the legislature to consider the matter of relief for the Upper Pf ninsula miners. A. B. Treadway, badly wanted in several States, will be given a term in the Kansas penitentiary for attempting to rob the

Emporia postoilice. Harvey Pa to and Frank Stires, the youtfiful desperadoes who killed Henry Helunck last August, were hanged at Danville, 111., Friday. The Georgia Legislature. Mrs. Tyndall, widow of the late Professor Tyndall, who caused his death by accidentally giving him poison, is so prostrated that it is feared she will not recover. English capitalists have bought Squaw Island in the Niagara river at Buffalo for $1,000,000, and propose to expend $1,500,000 in establishing a vast dock and elevator system. The four-year-old daughter of Congressman Whiting, of Michigan, died, Monday, from fright while suffering from delusions induced by dreams or some unknown cause. - The task of removing the World's Fair exhibits is proving more difficult than was expected, and it is estimated that it will requiro three months more time to v?oatethe buildings. The New York board of canvassers met at Albany, Wednesday, and canvassed the vote for State officers at the November election. The majority for Bartlett against Maynard is 101,034. A Texas Pacific train was robbed at Duvall, Tex., Thursday night, by six men. The express safe was. looted and the passenger j relieved of their valuables. The company's loss is not known. Ex-Senator Allen G. Thurman, who last month celebrated his eightieth birthday, has subscribed $25,000 to the building of an opera house to take the place of the burned Henrietta at Columbus, O. Henry Cochran, former weigher at the mint convicted of robbing the government of gold bullion to the amount of 9130X03. was sentenced to seven years and six months at hard labor and fined $1,0.X). The Columbian souvenir coin was a losing experiment. It not only failed to

realize for the World's Fair the premium confidently expected, but the directors have had to pay into tho United States Treasury $40,30:) to defray the cost of recoining into ordinary silver currency the $1,700,003 worth of souvenirs left on hand. Actiug Secretary Curtis, of the Treasury Department, has intimated very plainly that the Government would interfere should any attempt be made to give practical effect to the suggestion of Governor Waite, of Colorado, that Colorado make silver a legal tender and provide for its free coinage at a State mint. 4 Ex-Commissioner Carter, of the Hawaiian provisional government, has written a voluminous open letter to Secretary Gresham reviewing the entire matter. He avers that Gresham snubbed him while he was in Washington, and thinks his position as a commissioner representing a foreign power entitled him to respectful treatment and the full confidence of the Administration. At the instance of some of his constituents, Representative Bynum has had the duty on biack plates, from which tin plate is manufactured, changed from ad valorem to specific. It is to pay, under the modified bill, nine-tenths of on cent a pound, which, Mr. Bynum says, is as near the ad valorem rate fixed in the original Wilson bill as it was possible to figure it. Herman Zeitung, a midget, of Chicago, had himself boxed up in a dry goods box and shipped to Philadelphia by express. The address read: "C. O. D. $64. Philadelphia, Pa." He arrived in the Quaker city. Dec. 11, after two days travel, in good condition. He was arrested for trespass and sent to prison. Zeitnng explains that he made a bet that he could go round the world in a box, and that this was a trial trip. The United States postofflco authorities have determined to suppress the bond and investment cetnpanies which are operating ali over the country. Postoflke Inspector Stewart, of Chicago, received from Washington, Saturday, a list of fifty concerns operating in much tho same manner as tho Guarantee Investment Company, of Chicago, whose officers were convicted in Judge Grosscup's court. ThfiSe companies have been pronounced by tho Assistant Attorney-General for

tbe.Postofhce Department fraudulent and not entitled to the privileges of the United Stites mails The inspectors areinstrcuted to notify postmasters not to deliver registered letters or money orders to these concerns, and, if possible, to secure evidence against the companies to prosecute them under the law forbidding lotteries and the act forbidding the use of the mails for swindling purposes. FOREIGN, England will construct more great battleships and strengthen her navy. Tho internal conditions of Servia are desperate, as there is no money to pay the army and government officials. A band of exiles in that city are plotting to overthrow the existing government, and are believed to have the means to send ships to blockade aii the ports of Venezuela. Poultney Bigelow, the distinguished traveler, just returned w London from an extended tour of Europe, thinks the outlook for a general European war in the near future very promising. Russia has massed all its active army west of Moscow. The Kaiser is awake but not anxious for hostilities to begin. The alliance between France and Russia is liable to precipitate war at any time. FIFTY-THIRD CONGRESS. In the Senate, Monday, the expected political debate was averted by the federal elections bill being referred. Mr. Hoar submitted another resolution calling upon the President for specific answers to certain questions in connection with the Hawaiian matter, and spoke in support of it at length, ''The ostrich," said Mr. Hoar, "puts its head in the sand and thinks it will not be seen. The rhinoceros hides in his mud puddle and breathes through his nose and thinks he will not be seen, but neither of these are fit and suitable precedents for the Executive of the United States. The people have a right to know, and will know, let me say to my honorable friend, the truth of this matter.'1 Mr. Gray of Delaware, thought the resolution shonld go over under the rule, and characterized Mr. Hoar's remarks as scolding. The resolution went over till Tuesday, and at 2:40 the Senate adjourned. In the House. Monday, the proceedings were dull. Bills of minor importance .were passed. Measures affecting the District of Columbia were taken up until 3:30 when the House adjourned. In the Senate, Tuesday, the repeal of the federal election laws was discussed. Senator Stewart spoke in favor of repeal. Mr. Cullom opposed repeal in a set speech. Hesaid: Asa Republican, I would rather have such a system of laws meant and intended solely for the proper protection of the honest and legitimate voter even if every official agency for their enforcement shall be of the Democratic party. I have not so lost faith in American citizenship as to believe that the sworn officers of any political party will persistently ignore the requirements of wise and just election laws," In the course of his remarks Mr. Cuilom attacked the New York Democratic machine and severely reflected upon Judge Maynard, the recently defeated Tammany candidate. Senator Hill defended Maynard, and an extended and

running del ate ensued between Hill and Cullom. At 3:30 the Senate went into executive session, ai.d, at 4 p. m.. adjourned. In the House, Tuesday, the bill for the admission of Utah was considered. The principal point at issue was whether the enabling act should contain a provision imposing pains and penalty for polygamous marriages, the contention on the one hand being that the State should come in on an equal footing with other States, unhandicapped by such provisions; on the other that, as polygamy had been stamped out by federal statute, and, as the admission of the Territory woukl repeal that statute, Congress should make it practically part of the enabling act. As most of the Republicans have withdrawn their opposition to the bill, it is expected that it will pass by an overwhelming majority. The day was consumed with speeches for and against the admission of the Territory and at 5:30 the House adjourned. When the Senate met, Wednesday, Mr. Cockrell, from the joint committee on the executive department, reported the House bill to improve the methods of conducting the Postoffice Departments.and it was placed on the calendar. The President pro tern laid before the rfenate the message of the House disagreeing to the amendments of the Senate on the New York and New Jersey bridge bill, and asking for a conference. On motion of Mr. Gorman, Messrs. Vest, Gorman and Frye were appointed conferees on the part of tho Senate. The Hawaiian matter was then discussed by Mr. Frye, who scored Blount, and by Mr. Vest, who defended him, but declared that the restoration of the Queen would bo an act of war, after which Mr. Morrill addressed the Senate on the tariff question. His speech was devoted mainly to a comparison of the practices of thiscountiy with those of Great Britain, on the question of tho tariff and industrial conditions of the two countries and to a criticism of the Democratic party for its tendency to follow English precedents. At the close of Mr. Morrill's speech the Senate, at 4:30, wcut into executive session, after which it adjourned. In tho House, Wednesday, tho bill for the admission of Utah as a State passed without division. Bill granting right oi way through Indian and Oklahoma Territories to the Kansas & Southern railroad passed. Mr. Holman introduced a resolution to investigate the question of premiums paid to contractors for government vessels.
