Something About Railaoads.
The Fortnightly Club, a literary organization of gentlemen of the city, was addressed last night by Mr. L. A. Clark, of Crawfordsville, and formerly station master of the Monon railway at this place. Mr. Clark has for a number of years been a close student of the railway problem, and is the author of "Clark's Railway Digest" now in its second edition. His talk last night was on, "Our Railways Their Extent and Influence' and contained much that was practical. Mr. Clark said that history warrants the assertion that no invention of the present century has been the means of producing such social and commercial revolution throughout our entire country as that of steam locomotion on our railways. Mr. Clark then went on to show that there are three things necessary for prosperity, a fertil soil, busy workshops and a convenient mode of transportation. The American people are an ingenius class, producing the railway, strictly an American institution, and showing their ability to give great things to the world. It was the feeling of pro
gress that 50 vears aio hunt the
first railway, the final out growth of enterprise, financial daring jmd pluck. The first road for the transportation of passengers and freight was built in 1S29. The first ten years only 3,000 miles were built; the next ten years 0,000 miles additional were constructed; in 1860 we had over 30,000 .miles, ivhen railroading became recognized, as a leading industry of the
American railways has become in many places the common prey of designing politicians and not infrequently the unwilling victim of misguided and corrupt legislation He then gave specific cases of this kind in some western States, giving figures in support of his statements. The downward course of all freight rates has been very rapid for the past few years and rates are now lower than ever known before. He likened the organization of a great railway company to our National government, because of its perfection and system in all its details. Passengers and mail matter can now be delivered from China t Liverpool, crossing the Pacific, then the continent, and the Atlantic by steamer to Liverpool, in 21 days, The rail route is over 3,000 miles. In conclusion Mr. Clark said: "Friendly relations will encourage legitimate enterprises and reciprocity will put the machinery into motion. Between the common
carrier and the people, the most
