The express robbery at Kendallville, this State, recalls to mind a robbery almost as daring that occurred in Monroe county in 1885, when an express car was entered by one man and the safe rifled. As the Louisville night express pulled into Harrodsburg, 14 miles south of Bloomington, about 11 o'clock, some one got on the platform of the express car, and when the train was in full speed entered the car, Without any warning, he drew a revolver and shot Peter Webber, the baggage-master; then at the point of the weapon compelled Mr. Davis, the express messenger, to unlock the safe. He took out such valuable packages as he wanted, pulled tke bell cord,
ami as the train stopped shot Davis through the head, then made his escape into the darkness. The train run at once to Bloomington. when the alarm was given. In a few weeks arrests were made. Peter Webber, the baggatre master, soon improved and was brought here to see if he could identify the robber, for in the meantime a man by the name of Wright had been held on suspicion. When Webber arrived he at once said that Wriarht
was not the man, but pointed out Chesley Chambers, who was then at the National hotel, as the guilty man. The matter vas kept a profound secret, and at 1 o'clock that pay the court room was crowded to suflication to witness the preliminary hearing of Wright. Imagine the astonishment of the audience when Wright was turned lose and Chambers was arrested. Chambers was a young man living south of town about 7 miles, and had before borne a good reputation. Two long trials followed that created intense
interest throughout the State; the jury disagreed the first time, but the second ended in Chambers being sentenced to the penitentiary for two years. He served his term and is now living a quite lite in the

The soil, being wetted several inches deep, was in good condition, and plowing and sowing wheat were vigorously prosecuted. Much corn is cut and in shock, and that which is stiil standing can only be hurt by a very severe frost within a few days, the most of it being beyond all danger. big fc 'cut throat'- game among the Democrats. In about three months it will be time to commence organizing for the campaign. For clerk, Pete Dill has a good many supporters, and will no doubt be in the race. James B. Chirk has a good folio wing, and his friends will make a strong light for him if he wants the race. They say he deserves it for he has done a good deal for the party, and he made a very good race for Secretary of State three years ago. Frank Kinser is talked of for treasurer. For sheriff, John D, Morgan can have the race if he wants it. The Democrats made a big mistake in that office last year, and they will be more careful this time.
