He is not only a strong man in the pulpit, but he is what politicians would term a "mixer," and will be a worthy successor to Dr. Halstead. He has been the pastor of one of the leading New Albany churches for the past five years and is already quite well known in Bloom -ington, as he has preached here on one or two occasions. Dr. Willis has been appointed the presiding elder of the district. He is one of the strong men of the coaference and is a middle aged man with a familv. He has been stationel at the Locust Street church of Greencastie for the past year, and is a graduate of Do Pa aw University. Dr. Zaring is to be the new pas

next week. This is saying much for to give such an exhibition as is. promised has required a very large amount of time, patience and hard work. In return, the Telephone will promise it? readers that the Fair will not be a disappointment. Indications are that it will be much the best ever held in Monroe county, and one of the best ever held in the southern part of the State. The directors have proceeded upon the theory that iijirxt class Pair would meet with the hearty approbation and financial support, and have moved upon this theory. It n good Fair will not pay. a bad one will not. Especial anion has been given to the speed depart ment, and the racing promises to equal the best. It will by under stringent r.j eulation rules and under the supervision of experience ! horseine:, which gives the public premise of fair dealing both in and outside the ring. In saying this, it dots not mean that other departments have been neglected for the fad is that the entries in every section prom ise the largest in the history of the fair. In the way of genuine amusement, Prof. Gentry will introduce his trained dogs and ponies, and Prof. Wonder will give some remarkable feats in horseman ship. There will be splendid music, and it is to be a week of pleasure to everbody. The crowds will be carefully cared for, and should recefve the encouragement of city and country people alike.

called forth by thesuppo

ization of the A. P. A. in this city, and then followed on the circular two communications denunciatory of the Catholic cnurch. The insinuation was made that the Telephone had refused to print the matter, which, it may be added, is the truth. The paper would not insult a respectable community by the circulation of such insinuation and slander that was so vile that its own authors did not have tho courage to sign their names. It would be an insult to Protestants not to say that they did not

denounce such warfare, and the pastors of the city, without exception, are known to be outraged by this disowned publication. Rev. S. R. Lyons, of the United Presbyterian church, took occasion to denounce the publication from the pulpit Sunday morning. Holding

one of the circulars in his hand, he said that he had found it at his

door step that morning, and that

for combined ignorance and bruta

lity it3 like had never been equaled

in Bloomington. It had been distributed in the darkness of the night by some unknown persons, and the author had not the manhood to sign bis own name. He was unalterably opposed to such warfare, not only because of its secrecy, but because it was against the spirit of Christianity and the teachings of Christ; and he wanted to say and be understood that if such varfare was to go on he, for one, was ready to take a hand in it for the church. The Catholic was

a Christian church, doing much good in the world, and he was opposed to such methods as much as if directed against ihhe Methodist, the Presbyterian, or his own church. Rev. Lyons then referred briefly to the matter of the circular, baying that there was a time in the historv of the world that Catholics and and Protestants alike now looked upon with shame; and he regretted any move that created prejudice or stined up .sectarian hatred, when ihe object of all churches was and should be to Christianize and make the world better.
