Miss Pet Frill is visiting friends in Stinesville. Will F. Headley is now. with his parents at Martinsville. Charles Seibert and samily returned Sunday from Chicago. The cholera plague so far has been reported miH in ts character. The Republican State convention Iowa, will be held Wednesday. Up to August 10th the Fair has

taken 23,680,417, and spent $22r 011,821. Chris Sea and wife, of Spencer, are visiting their son, Homer Seay md family. Mrs. S. A. Fogg has gone on an extended visit to her daughter in Toledo, Ohio. Miss Lillie Chapman, who has been visiting friends at Bedford, has returned home. Mrs. J. C. Bright and daughters have returned home after a months' yisit in Kentucky. John Huntington, who has been sick for some time, is reported some better. Mrs. Horace Blakely. west 6th street, who has been reported sick is much hotter. William Gabe, of the Progress, is spending a few days at Wayport and Indianapolis. Capt. Alexander returned Sunday from Chicago where he has been spending several days. Walter Cogswell, of the drug firm of Phipps and Cogswell, Bed ford, visited in our city Sunday. ... . , .. - . W. P. Dill and family, who have been at Chicago for several days, have returned home. Mayor Buskirk and wife, who have beun attending the fair, returned home yesterday. The admission in the fair Saturday was 147.000. It was one o'clock before they could all get out at niht. Two nres, presumably the work o incendiaries, destroyed two million dollars worth of property at Minneapolis Sunday. Tom Huff, who has been at Sjencer working with the fast horses, spent Sunday with his parents. The young ladies of the town are trying to arrange another "Mother Hubbard" picnic for this week. The boys are not in it The Fiffg reunion lipid at Ellettsville Sunday was a great .success. A good crowd, well filled baskets were the features of the day. Two of the quarries at bmithville have been running al uost all summer. The Hired and Adams quarries havo Upu Uriiwi 'on'e of men at all times

In another department we saw

the lndmn display. Wax figures represented all the principal tribes in features and clothing, or rather, lack of it, I should say. The archaeological collection was very interesting to me. Here the relics were so arranged as to show the growth toward what might be termed civilization in the Indian. First were the implements made of rough stone, having very little shape of any kind, then came those which began to differentiate themselves into various forms; blades, arrors, rough vessels and after a while hammered copper v essels and implements are found. Plans of the houses, cooking utensils and the huts, baskets and blankets of the more modern ones were seen. In this same department, which seems to represent the West, stuffed animals of all kinds, minerals, furs, etc., are exhibited. From this place we went across the hall to the Secretary of State Department, flopping to rest on the way, and then forgetting that we were tired, climbing up into one of the bigr California redwood trees.

Tnis tree, or rather a section of the original tree, stands almost in the canter of the Administration Building. It is twenty feet in diameter and you enter it by a large door and ascend it by a winding stair. The tree was brought here in sections and some of the sections weigh four tons each. When w7e came down I looked about the hall. This is very large and circular in shape. It is beautifully ornamented with paintings and contains many interesting things dating back to the Colonial History of America. In this place I saw Franklin's correspondents, Washington's journals, letters from Lafayette, a great many early state papers and ever so many things which are interesting from a historical point of view. In the State Department I saw the original Emancipation Proclamation in Seward's handwriting and with Lincoln's signature. In the Treasury Department I saw all sorts of money, bonds, dies and coins; I saw seveial bills with $:.o.00 stamped on them. I imagi ad that one of those would be a prt-tty convenient thiag to have around; at least I believe I would risk being inconvenienced by one if I iad it. In this part of the building we saw figures representing Greeley and his Aictic explorers, with their sleds and dogs. We also siw

the tiags, cooking vessels and arms which have been at the farthest north point yet been reached. After this we went to a part of the building that I do not know exactly how to designate. Any way, htre we saw all the methods employed by the Government in the inspection of diseased animals. Diseased parts were shown in jars illustrating the various stages of all the principal divisions in domestic animals. In this place they had

a shoulder of beef and different

parts of sheep and hogs in plaster, that looked so like those you mm in the butcher shops everyday tiuit

you would have declared that yon

could smell fresh meat. 1 almost expected to find blood on my iiuorni vhtn I triiwhw) rhp lwf Tlwn

we saw the diseases of fruits a thoy appear, and this fruit could als hardly be told from the real. The little green apples make one think, "Now just wait till I iind one which has not that rust on it aud 1 uill get some salt and eat it."' We saw a potato vine with the bugs on it, and Aunt and 1 have been
