INTERESTING UNION MEETING.
The W. C. T. U. services Sunday
night were largely attended. They were held at the Walnut Street Presbytemn church, Revs. Lyons, Clevenger and Halstcad assisted, and the sermon was given by Rev. M. A. Gault, of the Reformed Presbyterian church. He took his text from Isaah 10, 12. He said it was God's warning against unjust and oppressive legislation, and applied to the license of the liquor traffic more than to any other evil, for all other evils sunk into iutignilicancc when compared with the liquor traffic. Where lawless violence is killing its tens, the
rum curse is killing its thousands.
dosed Saturday night, for selling j Wheve cmTupt rins nn(l monopo-
without license. The commissioners granted Ed license, but they wetc not taken out. Alex. Robinson and other Bloomington earpeaters are busy at Bedford building a handsome home for Walter Robertson. The cost of the houso will be about $1,600. Kirk Miers was over from Spencer Sunday. He has five horses with him at the Spencer grounds, three trotters and two pacers. The Spencer fair begins the 15th. Next Sunday will be song service at the Coll ege Avenue Methodist church, and Prof. J. P. Naylor, of Greencastle, is to be down and assist in the singing. i Fred Fess brings to the Telephone office a sample of home grown peaches that would be a credit to any climate, and give evi
dence of what horticultural idea bring about County Commissioner John Sherlock has so much improved that he is again able to be alout. Saturday he made an inspection of the west south pike. He will soon bp as well as usual.
Rev;IT. VanCleave, of the Kirk wood Avenue Christian church, has been given a two weeks' vacation by his congregation and will leave next week to spend most of the time at Bethany Park. By order of the superintendent of the Monon, the two stone trains have been discontinued for the present Oiae rim from Bedford Bloomington and the other from Bloomington to Gosport Want of work was the trouble. Col. W. M. Alexander and Mrs. Fannie Young and Miss Belle has gone to the world's fair to remain a week or ten days. Mrs. Young and daughter have lieen visiting here for the past month an. I will go from Chicago to their home in Kansas.
The speed ring of the Big Bloomington Fair association has been completed at a cost of about II,300, and better still, it has all been paid for. The assessments generally have all been paid up four in all, and no more will be made until some time in September. It is quite probable that an ampatheater will ie built just before the fair. A xAd attempt at house breaking occured Saturday night on ea&t 4th troet Mrs. Harry Imes was the onl y occupmt of her home, and she has -bom sKr! for some time. Her iiu-iinud i- always late coming lYom i;e iai her shop on Sutiu day nigh(, and on that night he came home finding his wife much worse on account of the scare. She had company with her until about bieven, and immediately after they left, some one attempted to raise the front window. In this they failed and went to the back window and commenced cm tins: the screen. Mrs. lines, by screaming scared the would be house breakers away, and no further attempt w is made.
lies are wasting the people's money
hy millions, the rum traffic is wasting it by hundreds of millions, Down at the bottom of nearly all of our social disorder, unrest, political corrupt Jon, depression in business, stagnation in trade, suffering in homes, anarchy and the like, lies the liquor traffic. Its legalisation is one of the unrighteous decrees against the framers of which God in the text pronounces a woe. The State might almost as well license the violation of every precept of the deoalogue, because this traffic is at the bottom of eight-tenths of all crime in the land. The greatest injustice of the license S3rstem is to wrong the poor. In the language of the text, it "turns aside the needy from judgement, and takes away the right from the poor of my people.' It is the most grinding and dangerous monopoly. It saddles the heaviest hardens upon the poor. 1 know of town in tl e west where "the license money from the saloons and tines imposed for drunkenness pays the entire school tax. This exempts the property owners from this burden, and imposes it all upon the victims of drink. Who are the men who patronize your seven Bloomington saloons i Where does the money come from that goes over their counters; Does it come out of the salaries of the ministers? Is it from the professors in your State University? Are the bankers and prosperous business men of Bloomingon the patrons of the saloons i Watch the men who go in and out of those saloons and you will find
them to be your poor day laborers. It has been carefully estimated that out of their hard earned wages $540,000,000 are paid annually over saloon counters in this island. This takes food from their tables, carpets from their floors, pictures from their' walls. It tills their
homes with wretchedness and des-
