Two cottages, the property of
Mrs, Kyors, were completely destroyed and it was by the strongest efforts that the flames were kept from spreading. The houses were
occupied by Silas Durnel and Wesley Crain, and were located side by side on the north end of Washington street The house occupied by Durnel, on the north corner, is where the lire originated. The family was eating dinner at the time, and noticed smoke in the adjoining room used for a summer -itclien. Before the could realize the situation the house w:is in dames. Everything was 1ol hut a few small articles. A wind was blowing from the east, and it was only a few minutes
until the house to the south occupied by Wesley Crain was on tire, also the small Darn on the General Hunter lots, to the north. The barn was soon destroyed and but little of the Crain house was saved. When the three buildings were burning the sparks were driven in every direction, and it was by the most careful watching that the
houses occupied by P. K. Buskirk and the one just vacated by R. A. Yansickle were kept from being fired. A number of out-buildings were saved with difficulty. It was necessary for the steamer to set oa Washington, down by 7th street, requiring considerable time to' get water to the tire. The two houses destroyed were the property of Mrs. Kyors, north
and was ready for the time to be set to make the test. In the meantime he gave assurance that the streets would be put in the same condition in whkdi they were found. As stated above, the test will be
made next Tuesday morning. The ordinance under which the plant was constructed provides that the test shall be to throw five streams of water simultaneously, each to be 100 feet high, and to be from such points in the city as the council may select. During the week the company will test the mains to their own satisfaction and make such repairs as they tind necessary. An Oriental League has been organized in Pdoomington with a charter membership of tfO. it is a secret, socal and benevolent order, the insurance beine a special feature. The lirst meeting was held in
the Red Men's hall, but soon a lodge room will be rented and
meetings will be held every two weeing. The League is So. 17 in Indiana, and the officers are as follows: E. T. Treadway, 'Conservator; J. H. Kirby, Legate; Wm.B. Smith, Counselor; Frank Romizer, Secretary; C. J. Axtell, Treasurer; Jeff Robinson, Captain of the Council; Bert McGee, Elder. The remains of Mrs. Jackson Dowden ariiv.ed from Indianapolis, Wednesday, and were taken to the home south of town for burial. Mrs. Dowden's health had been failing for gome time, making it necessary for her to be taken to the
