THE DIGNITY OZ LABORS own citizenship. I (4). In the different kind of
n.. iv i i necessary labor there is an absolute i

first or n series of sermon Sunday night, to the laboring men. There was a large crowd present to hear
the address, and it is pronounced by all one of the speakers vtv best effo rts. As has already been stated, there will be a series of &i
addresses demoted to workmen, and that of Sunday night on fcThe Dignitv of Labor" w the tirst. Dr. Ualsted look for his text the appropriate words, 4iArso,
therefore, and be doing, and the
Lord be with thee." He divided
his talk under dve separate heads: (1). . Labor is not a curse from
the fall. If it be so that labor was
made a curse in the declaration. 4iin

human pursuits, one is as high as
the otheivifd as good as the other, !
and no better. The business of the j washerwoman has as much merit ; in it as that of preaching. I wish i in my soul to-night that 1 could get J things as reliably clean in my husiness, as our washer woman (lues in j hers. Tiie business of a hodcarrier i

Cleveland.
(5). Toil stands related to
achinement as cause to effect. The
great characters of the world were celebrated for the amount of labor they could perform. They never retired trom their work. Moses Paul, Luther and Wesley died with the harness on. The Bible does not put up greatness in wealth or in fat offices; or in show but in xenu'ee to other. This is gospel altruism. How simple this makes every ques-

the workmen of to-day will look about and sec what thev are doing, they will not be jealous of their fame. Will it not abide in these bridges, and highways, and aqueducts, and private palaces, and pub

character. Industry is a quality of
the peace of uocL Labor brings a
blessing beyond the gain there is in
it. Labor exalts the manhood and builds the life. Oar work! From
all eternity that is the question of
supremest moment. Bass of gold, paper crowns, tinselled topknot, the peacock feathers and stately trappings of our funeral, what are all these when we come to step out into the divine everlasting night of death aad face the eternal verities-
country. During the past twentyfive years, according to the most careful statistics, the wealth of the nation has increased from about twenty to sixty billion dollars. But as a rule this increase of wealth has not been shaved by wage earn -
ers. it nas een estimated mat m
one year the wages of 5.200,000
unskilled laborers was 1 ess than
$200 a year. The legislation of the
country has passed this enormous increase of wealth largely into the hands of the capitalists and tool owners, until 31,000 men own more than one half of the wealth of the nation."
