TROUBLE.
From yesterday's Daily.
The water works excitement continues. Never in the history ot our little citv has there been such an intense feeling among the working men,and much seems centered about both the contractor Each side has made their statements in the Daily and it is not necessary to repeat anything that has been said by either Mr. Coon or Mr. Erlund. The only trouble is, the men want the money due them, and they have determined that nothing more can be done on the plant until payment is made. This is the size of the situation today. The working men hold that the controversy between the two sets, of contractors has nothing whatever to do with the justice of their case, and they propose to act on that line. All efforts to get men to go to work have failed thus far. As early as 6 o'clock people began to congregate on the streets,, and by 7 o'clock a large crowd had gathered about the bank corner to await developementd. An hour later, however, proved that no one was going to be put to work. A crowd of fifty or more, headed oy John Matthews, fclie leader of the working men, made the rounds of the trenches shortly after 8 o'clock, but no one wal found at work. Just before starting Matthews said to the men that he did not want a hand lifted in violence, or any threats used, as the only object was to thoroughly explain to any one who might be found at work, their grievences, ted give all a thorough understanding of the cause of the troublfe. As no one was found at the work, the company returned in the course of an hour,, but did not give up its vieilence during the morning. It has been impossible to get men to go to work, though considerable effort has been made. Mr. Erlund offers to pay his men every evening, but no one seems to want to take hold. A number of caucuses were held yesterday afternoon and at night, and the matter of going to work was thoroughly discussed, but whtfn the time arrived this morning no one was willing to begin work, ao no effort was made to-day. An effort has been made to secure a leader to take charge of a gang of men, but thus far nothing has resulted. THE LATEST. There is a well founded rumor on the streets that the contractors for the water works company, as represented by Mr. Erlund, aref nego
tiating with contrators in a large city to bring a foree of men here and complete the work. There is also a rumor that a number of men have been secured to work here if a leader can be found. The effort to secure men to go to work this afternoon completely failed, and nothing will be done before to-morrow.
