The Louisville, New Albany & Chicago road earned the third week of October, $52,773; increase over earnings for the corresponding week ot 1888, 2,472. Hon. Isaac Layden, the new member of the Board of Trustees of Indiana University, was in the city Tuesday. It was bis first visit since his election to the board.
J. R, Gilford and family have moved here from Orleans, Orange county, and occupy a portion of the Dr. Kirk wood property. Four additional orders for the school books under the new law have been made, Bloomington city. Salt Creek, Clear Creek and Polk townships. The copy books for the entire county are here and will be distributed to-morrow.
The Commissioners meet tomorrow to settle up the pike and other outstanding business. It will probably be the last meeting in which Mr. MeOalla will participate.

Squire James Rogers, living about 3 miles north of town, was stricken with paralysis Monday, and at latt accounts was in a precarious condition, lie was assisting in loading hay in the bam, when the paralysis made its firet appearance. He .vas at once carried to the house, and has since been in a dangerous con dition. Squire Rogers is an old citizen generally known thoughout the county and has many friends wiift will be aurry to hear of his terrible affliction.

The Indiana State Journal and the Telephone will be sent any address one year for $2.25. The Monroe County Agricultural Society will pay its premiums tomorrow 50 cents on the dollar. Owing to the protracted meetings at the Christian church, there will be no union temperance services Sunday night.
The otlicers of the North Bedford Stone Company were in session here Wednesday, holding an informal meeting and closing up the legal points in their recent land purchase and incorporation. i James D. Find ley started to his home in Sargent, Nebraska, Tuesday, after a very pleasant visit among Monroe county friends. He will go by the way of Iowa, where he will visit a sister. Trustee Todd is arranging to rebuild the school house that was destroyed by fire in No. 5, Polk township. The cost of the new building will be $475. There was no insurance on the house that was destroyed. Hugh Logan and Mr., Hamilton, prominent farmers of Decatur county, have been here this week. They bought 75 line mule colts from Samuel and Wm. A. Wallingford; and yesterday started with them through the country to their home. Joseph H. Hunter and family arrived in the city Monday evening and are guests of Gen. Morton C. Hunter. Joe left yesterday to spend several days with his brother, John, in Knox county, and by this time the festive quail has taken to the woods.
The Indianapolis ITcivs of Wednesday says: "TheCincinnati, Bloomington & Chicago Railway Company was incorporated to-day. All projected, the line which the company proposes to build will begin in Dearborn County and extend 300 miles north west through Ripley, Decatur,
! Bartholomew, Brown, Monroe,Owen, Clay, Parke, Fountain, Warren, Benton and Jasper Counties. The capital stock is $9,000,000. The com
pany is composed chiefly of Eastern capitalists." Henry Durueli, living in the east part ot the county, had a terrible experience with a dog last Monday. The animal had suddenly grown cross and Durnell went to "tie him, when he was savagely attacked. A desperate struggle followed and before the fight ended it was necessary to kill the dog with a hatchet. Darnell was bitten several times, and fearing that the animal might be mad he went to Terre Haute. The mad stone when applied did not stick, and Durneli returned satisfied.
John T. Woodward has bought the interest of Mr. Sparks in "the store at Stanford and is now the proprietor. There are few better business men in Monroe county than Mr. Woodward and he has already established an excellent trade at Stan ford.
Morgan county now boasts of two centenarians. James Culver, who resides two miles east of Martinsville will be 101 years of age on the 4th of March. He was born in Wyth county,Virginia, and is well known among the F. F. V.'s. The other is Miss Nancy Marvin, of Monrovia. The pump has been plaeed in position for tlie artesian well, and in a day or two the water that has beer, standing for several weeks will be pumped out by the aid of an engine. Then, if after close examination, the water proves to be valuable, improvements will be made. If it is worthless the entire scheme will be abandoned.

The lady friends of Mrs. Maggie Hodges gave her a surprise on the evening of Oct. 26th, the occasion being her 40th birthday. The evening was a very pleasant jone to all, each one wishing the hostess many more birthdays to be spent as enjovable. Refreshments of five difxerent kinds of cake, also coffee and fruits were served during the evening. The guests numbered 23, and were: Mrs. Strong,Rogers,Tourner, Rose, Fulk, Pauley, Neeld, Fowler, Fess, Rice, Martin, Adams, McLaughlin, Fields, Coir, Robinson, Morgan, Paris, Allen and Showers, Misses .Bray, Borland and Robineon.
