Miss Myrtle Parks, one of Martinsville's cultured young ladies, attended the Kirkwood reception, and remained till Monday the guest of Miss Knox. Miss Dora Lemon, '89, has accepted a position as instructor of French and English in the female college atTerre Haute. Her college friends congratulate her. The effort being made by the literary soc ieties to organize an oratorical association is a move in the right direction, and is to be commended. We must be represented next year ia the State Oratorical. The kcture Sunday afternoon was deliveied by Rev. J. M. Foster, of Cincinnati. He had a good audience aad his address was scholarly and sloqunt. The Iteture next Sunday will be given by Prof. Swain. Through the kindness of Prof. Nay lor we have been permitted to read a mos: interesting letter from Fred. Moss, dated at lthica, N. Y. It is said to be, with tha exception of the buildings at Ann Arbor, the first erected by a college fraternity west of the Aileghenies The Greencastle Banner says that the enrollment atDePauw up to date is about 750 including all the .departments of the University. This is considerable in advance of the enrollment at the beginning of last vear, and insures an increase for the year of at least two hundred students. The students met in mass convention Friday afternoon in Maxwell Hall to complete all arrangements regarding the election of the chief editors of the Student. The whole matter is to be left to a committee of eleven one from each faction in college and one to be selected from the faculty. With the concurrence of eight of this committee, the editors may be elected.but no two from the same faction
may serve as editors at the same
time. Also each element must be represented at least once in five years.

I see that the Cour'er devotes a good deal of space in last week's issue of that exponent of Democracy
for Mouroe county to the argument
that borne instiutions should be pi o-
tected,and should have preference to those from abroad. This is highly gratifying indeed, and wo are truly
glad to see it coming from one iso able and influential. It shows that Democracy in Monroe county is progressing.and that there are strong grounds to hope that thev will yet come out on that broad Republican principle of Protection to home industries, which is the only true American idea. As will have been noticed the Courier brings out this thought in the itm claiming that the Mechanics Band, of Bloomington, should have been employed in preference to the Harrodsburg Band to furnish music for the soldiers' reunion. I will only add in this connection that when brought to a practical test, "it was ever thug." I have only one criticism to offer in
regard to this particular case, and
