Mrs. Mike Seward and Mrs. B. F. Adams rt turned from Kansas Wed nesday. Mrs. Adams was aceompained bv her sister, Emma Brant, who will attend the university. It is net generally known that over $1,500 is paid out in Bloomingtou each wee c for poultry. There are two packing companies that buy poultry only for shipping, using refrigerator cars to ship it as far east as Uysw York. The members of the Mechanics band are high in their praise of the Salem fair management, ior the many courtesies that were shown them. They state that there were over 6,000 people on the grounds Satuiday. Quite a number attended from Monroe county. George Bollenbacher received u telegram yesterday from Mr. Mansfield, superintendent of the I. &V. road, stating that work on the road from Gosport to the Big Creek quarry will begin Wednesday or Thursday, tjie contract having been made. Grading will be started at each end of the line, the work progressing to the center. Work on the new Episcopal church commenced in earnest Friday mom ing. It is to be located on east Kirk wood Avenue, just east of Mrs. Hight, and the work is to be completed by Nov. 1st. It i to be an ornamental frame structure, two stories a basement below and auditorium above that will seat 300 peopie. Mr.Byerly is doing the masonry andAbrahamDonaldson has charge of the carpentering. The cost is to be about 2,000. Judge D. D. Banta has been here lor the past week completing arrangements for the opening of the law school. The indications are that thero will be both a junior and senior els.ss, and in this eent an instructor for the junior class will be necessary . The plan now is to select three different persons in the

Mr Rogers is of the firm of Louden & Rogers and is too well known in Monroe county to need indorsement from the Tklei'hoxe. Woodward, train-master, states to the rjsLEX'uo.vs that six breakmen have been discharged for intoxication and having a hand in causing the wreck south of the depot Sun day in orn i ng. Mr. V ood ward states that the geueral public is not aware of the strict rules that the railroads enforce in regard to the men drinking. Before a man i employed he is informed by the trainmaster thai under no circumstances will drinking be allowed, either on or while o!f of duty, and that if it becomes known that the rule has been violated, discharge is certain. Mr. Woodward states that in thirty years of railroad experience in mployiag men, he has had more trouble with dnc king than all else combated, and of all the accidents that oA cared in that time, with bat few exceptionp they were the result of men axing intoxicant.
The gran j try began its work yesterday. The wileof James Wilson(colored) died Sunday morning. James Calhoun and little daughter, of Vincennes, spent Sunday in the city. A meeting of the "Y" will be held at the home of Miss Ada Pearson to nisrht.
The Thayer Comedy Co. band is to furnish the music for the Monroe county fair. Mrs. Ella (Nuckols) Swope is here from Chicago visiting her parents on east street.
The regular communion services of the U. I church will be held the 29th of this month.
Mrs. Joseph Dinsmore returned from Iowa, Saturday, after a pleasant visit among relatives. Mr. Craig, of Noblesville, was in Bloomingtou attending to some personal business, over Sunday. Miss Eva Whisnand left last week to visit friends in Vincennes and will remain a month or more.
Dr. J.D. Simpson will go to Evansville this week to attend a meeting of the Ohio Valley medical society. If there is artesian water at Martinsville atid Spencer, why not at Bloomingtou? A fair test has never been made.

Ab. Helton has bought out the interest of John Cole in the transfer company and it is now owned by Helton &' Carmichael.
Students to the law school w ill be charged $12 per term for tuition. Preparatory students will pay $ti instead of $3 as heretofore. Thurston Smith is now the clerk in the Union Depot Hotel at St. Joe, Missouri, and like other people he wants to read the Telephone.
J. H. Eaton has returned from eastern Ohio, where he was called by the dangerous sickness of his mother. She was much better when he left.
The new school books for Bioomington and Monroe county were shipped Saturday and will be here to-day. Faris Bros, will probably sell them.
Fred Brandon, of Van Bureu township, was working with a team when it became frightened and uin away, tearing up the wagon, but not injuring the horses or Mr. Draudou. Simeon May, of Indian Creek township, died very suddenly last Sunday. Mr. May was over 80 years old and was in good health for one of his age. He was sick less than half an hour.

Millis has been offered the positiou of principal of the Vincennes high school, at a salary of $000 The position was decline d a he had alreadv taken the work at Paoli, to begin Monday week. University enterance examinations will beheld in the Preparatory School building Wednesday morning, Sept. il, begining at 8 o'clock. The Preparatory School opens on Thursday, Sept. 12, at S A. M. The wife of John Scott, living il miles south-east of Smit'hville,died Saturday night of flux. She was aboit 55 years old. Mrs. cott was a woman highly respected and the family has the sympathy of the neighborhood. One day list week Dr. Brannam and John W. Stivers, both of Washington township, got into a quarrel over a boy and in a tight that followed Brannam bit Stiver' thumb. Since that time the hand and arm have swollen up to almost double the usual size, and Stivers suffers intense pain day-and night. It is feared amputation will be necessary. It has been almost definitely settled that the Tedigo Washing Machine Co., now at Harrodsburg, will move to Bioomington at an early date. The suit that has been pending was compromised las t week and the factory is now out of litigation. Mr. Mary Pedigo, the principal owner, will move to Bloom iugton at once and has rented the Gilmore cottage, west 7th street. Eldoiado( Avk.) Public Senlthtenf: "Prot. J. R. The Bloomingtou Oolitic Stone Quarry Co , that has its quarry in the southwest part of the city, has their newjjehanneier at work and is arranging to put in a tirst class steam derrick. The Stinesville "(: Bloomingtou quarry, at Stinesville. also started work on their switch, this week, that connects them with the .Monon road. Undoubtedly t h e stone industry is booming. The Spencer fair this week, and it is proposed to have the best exhibition in southern Indiana. On Wednesday a lady will go up in a balloon and jump out. On Thu rsday and Friday will be the famous Charriot races that are attracting so much attention throughout the country. The races will "be unusally good, as a large number or enties have already been made. A special invitation is extended to Monroe county people to attend. A company which proposes to build another short railroad in South era Indiana, was incorporated Wednesday. It is knowr as the Cnv'irnati & Bedford Railway Company, and will build a line thirty miles
long, extending from a point on the O. fc M. Road, in Marion township, Lawrence county, north to Reid Station, on the line of the Bedford and Bloomfield branch of the L. N. A. & C. Road. The capital stock of the company is $500,o00; John T. Barnard, of Cincinnati, is at the head of the enterprise.
