LOCAL NEWS E. P. Bicknell, of the Indianapolis yetr staff,is in the city spending part of his summer vacation. The stenographers of the State have arranged to hold a convention on Aug. 27, 2$ and 29, at Indianapolis, for the purpose of organizing an association of short-hand writers. An interesting programme has been

prepared, and the movement promises to be a success, as already a larger membership than any other State association is assured. Mrs. Anna E. Lemon, of this city, is the secretarv of the association.

Homer D wden starts this morning for -:istell, Kansas. Mrs, JMattie McCarty, of Indianapolis, is a guest of Joseph G. McPheeters and wife, north College Ave.

Thomas A. Todd, of Polk township, will move this fally to Ileltonsville, Lawrence county, where he will eugage in the clothing business. The work on gas well No. 2 is progressing very nicely. A depth of 130 feet has been reached and the drillers are at work day and night.

Rev. Wra. Boss, the new Christian preacher, occupied the pulpit Sunday morning and evening. He is a young man in age as well as in appearance, but has a deep, strong voice, and both morning and evening delivered excellent discourses. He comes to our city with the highest recommendations, and is evidently a strong man, both in and out of the pulpit The Telephone welcomes him to Bloomington, and wishes him much success, and that he may accomplish much good along with the other excellent men of his profession that are engaged in the work here.

At the council meeting the night of the 16th, contracts were let for the improving of 2nd, 0th, Sth and Rogers streets. The grading of 2nd street was let to Souders & Voss, the crossings and guttering to J. L. Smith. Sixth street Slow & Linchicun?y grading, crossings and paving; JlL. The uFree Trade" Democratic meeting advertised for the somewhat noted J. L. Lee, of Blufton;tor last Fridav evening at the court room, was a dreary failure. The nnmber in attendance was, in fact. so small that the local manager changed the plac? of meeting to the grand jury room. And even then the chairs were not all occupied. Here, however, a few unterritied bourbons listened to' a long and tidious recital of threadbare free trade arguments and vehement declamation against men of wealth and progression. R. A. Fuik, self appointed chairman of the meeting, as quick as possible turned the affair over to the stranger with in our gates, possesed cf the good old Democratic name "Lee." Subsequent to the free trade haajjui hi t ominated all the officers for the local organization. In this manner Mr. Fulk kept making himself useful as well as prominent, and got everything arranged to suit himself beside?. He thus conferred his honors: President,Bob Miers;Secretary G. R. Worral;Treisurer, Ja. Kyaiv This will be found to be very embarassiug to Judge Miers, for the reason that as yet the Judge did uot desire to connect himself openly with the free ti ad e crowd, and accordingly staid away from the meeting. Hon. J. R East, Dr. K. Rhorer, T. H. Sudbury, and many other local lights remained away and no doubt were iu better business. Judge E. Iv. Milieu, D. O. Spencer and Will Kogers looked tired now and fcleepy, too; and before the farce was half over Milieu and several other unappreciative auditors left the room. Contractor McCormick contributed 8io cash,
