Mrs. Sallie Nuckola, of Bloomington, is visiting friends in the vicinity of Salem.
Mr. Cassell, chief of the train dispatcher s forc-2, is sick and not able to be on duty. C. P. Tuiey and family now occupy the new residence on south College Avenue.
Eli Boruff is adding an addition to his residence on west 4th str?et that will be quite an improvement John W. Suskirk and wife have returned from Martinsville, where they have been for the past four weeks.
The Bloommgton base ball club is to play the Mitchell boys on their grounds the loth. David Bray and family, of Indianapolis, are visiting friends in the west part of the county. Prof. Gilbert and wife are in the city. The Professor takes a position in the University in September. Rev. W. JR. Halstead was at Indianapolis this week attending a meeting of the DePauw university board.
It may be of interest to our suburban friends to know that the new chair factory will be in operation next week.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Hunt and baby, of Chicago, are here visiting Mrs. Hunt s mother, Mrs. M. J. McCoy, on west 6th street.
Nathan Smith, south of town, will move to Bloomington in a few week?. He will occr.ov the Alexander brick property, south Walnut street. Prof. OMbert and wife have rented the lu ' e property, east Kirkwood Ave The Professor leaves this week for Washington, to attend to some business, and Mrs.
Gilbert will visit Indianapolis friends.
L-C.Oaks,a former student of Indiana University now living at Val-" paraiso, has distinguished himself by inventing a new lamp chimney. Owing to sickness Mr. B. F, Adam?, jr., did not get to go to Kansas. S. E. Carmichael was also detained by the sickness of his child. Mrs. Mullikin and her daughter Mrs. Thomas Olliphant, returned to thvir lv me at Columbus, Kansas, yesterday. Both were former residents of this ulace.

The city council at its last meeting reappointed Garrison Reeves as night policeman.unti! the 15th. It is stated that there is to he another vacancy m the crons of teachers of the irraaed school. It was ever thus!
Mrs. Ella Lynn, of Yellow Springs, Ohio, is in the city and will visit her Bloomington friends for tho next month.

Charae Seward and Miss Mary Fitzpatriek, who were married at Greencistle the 4th of July, will make their future home with Mrs, Lizzie Binkiey, east 7th street. A number of our colored people are attending the camp meeting at Spencer. Yesterday the 7 th street A. M. E. choir went over to furnish the music. Rev, Simpson is also attending. . Bullard, while working in the plaining mill yesterday evening,had a terrible gash cut in his left handHe counts that year lost that the saw does not eat a finger or shake hands with him, as yesterday. The Sabbath Schools of Monroe county will probably hold meetings in the county Sept. 3rd, 4th and 5th. One of the meetings will be held in Bloomington and two in the country. State Secretary W. N. Bell will attend.
Miss Joe Carter, of Smith ville, met with a very painful accident last Tuesday evening. While out horseback riding the horse in front kicked her just below the right knee. Fortunately no bones were broken .
Prof. H. B. Miter has resigned his position as teacher of Rhetoric and Elocution in Indiana University, and will not return in September. His successor has not yet been announced. He only spent one year in the institution. Lieut. Walter Howe was up at Cornell University, Iowa, last week and spent two days preparatory to taking charge of the military department of the institution. The enrollment is over 5C0 and studying of military tactics are made compulsory with the male students. Last Tuesday while Mrs. Elias Able was coming down stairs she became light headed and fell for some distance, breaking her right arm above the wrist. It was carefully placed in position by Dr. Maxwell, jr., but as he is in her seventieth year, it will take the break a long time to heal.
Sheriff Farr is having the court room cleaned up, but not before it needed it by several years. The walls and ceiling are to be painted, the wood work varnished, new matting put on the floor, and hereafter Judge Pearson will occupy a handsomely finshed and upholstered chair.

after ordered. Prof. J. R. Weathers, principal ot the New Albany public schools, was in the citv on a visit this week. He was a student in the university several yearj ago. The State Horticultural Society met at Mitchell this week and the attendance was large. Those from here wre Fred Fess, Joseph Dinsmore and Wui. Bunker and wife.
Another good citizen is to be added to Bloomington in the person of Jonathan May, who intends to move from his farm and occupy hishouso on Walnut street, vacated by J. M. McGee,

It is stated that the proper preparations were not made to entertain ti e visitors. Among those who will take part in the Old Settlers' meeting at Unlonville tho. 11th are Ira J. Chase, Jas. V. Mitchell, Wm. Waltmaa, Geo. W. Cooper, Joseph Moore, and Geo. W. Terry, The biggest bear story told by an old settler will be

day. Her relatives, neighbors and friends met in a body at herhoma, and enjoyed a very pleasant evening. After refreshments were served, several apj ropriate presents were given, one being a handsome chair from her husband, Wm. H. Byerly. Mrs. Byerly in a very amiable woman and knows how to entertain her friends, if she is taken by surprise. The company dispersed at a late hour, after wishing her many returns of the day. Jon .Kobinson,the father-in-law of James M. Hunter, will move to Bloomington in a short time. He has rented the handsome property of 8, K. Rhorer in tin east part of town, just west of Tobo Smith. While at Pittsburg flenryS. Bates was presented with a bible by Mrs. Bollman. It was taken from the drift at Johnstown, but the name on the fly leaf is so washed by the water that it is impossible to make it: out. The trustees of the graded school building are having the wood-work, boiSfftdde and out, p ainted. The contract was Jet to A. T. and Homer Massy, who have a force of ten hands at work and they will be kept busy for the next month.
At the council meeting Tuesday night the petition to macadamize Morton street from the depot north, was favorably received and an ordinance ordered to prepare for the work. This will be a great improvement and one that is much needed.
The gas well company at Spencer, after drilling down 711 feet, struck a vein of salt water. A pint of the water was evaporated and three quarters of an ounce sf salt was extracted. Judging by Bloomington's experience, they had as will abandon the work.
Bloomington Democrats are talking up a "tariff reform" meeting. "Tariff reform" is the new name for the coming campaign. This "reform" meeting is to be held 6ome time in September and an effort is to be made to get Senator Voorhees to come and talk to the people. The secret of the whole business is that Voorhees is now in the canvass for re-election to the Senate and his admirers are bringing him here to push on the boom against ex-Gov. Gra'. The element that folio trs Bob. Miers is for the ely ex-Governor, but the John W. Buskirk wing is for the Tall Sycamore. So the tight is on.
