be on the side of the man that knows fish." Quite a uumber of our citizens during the absence of our townsman, M. J. Smith at Cedar Lake, realized the truth of this saying. Scarcely a day passed (furing Mr. Smith's sojourn at the Lake that he did not send down to his Bloom-

ington friends from three to tive barrels of speckled beauties, his average catch being Vd- lbs.- !ilr Manheimer,of Chicago, a noted tisherman of that place, writes Mr. Smith an appreciative letter, from which we qnote "The large pike caught by you weighing 136 lbs seven feet two inches in length and four feet and six inches in girth, was the largest fish ever caught in the State. I cheerfully yield to you the palm and acknowledge you the "Champion." The fish referred to by Mr. ilanheimer was brought

home by Mr. Smith and the measurement given above verified in the presence of Enoch Fuller, Robert Marshall and Isaac Clamau, gentlemen who will cheerfully bear wit cess to the remarkable size of the fish. This fish was one time on the hook of the Chicago man, who through bad management allowed his escape. The Telephone congratulates our distinguished fisherman upon his excursion to Cedar Lake. The annual report of Uoh Zollinger, of the Indianapolis Pension Agency, shows that from June 30, 1888, to Jane 20, 1889, iht anoy paid out iu pensions $3,430,000, an increase of $1, 600,000 over th preceding year. The net number of pensioners on the rolls was increased five thousand during that time. Some republics may be ungrateful, but it canuot be charged against the U.S. Cabinets a specialty at van
