Charles H. Mixer, the district passenger agent of the Vandalia railroad, was in the city Friday

evening.

Mrs. Carpenter, who lives in New York City, is a guest of H. T. Simmons and family and will remain for several weeks.

Charley Ousley's little horse won the pacing race at Spencer the 4th. Dillon Talbott's horse was the first

in the trotting ring.

The oats harvest is a little late as compared with the wheat harvest. Farmers complain that the rust is doing considerable damage to the crop.

The entertainment given at the

court house Friday night was not largely attended. The net proceeds from the entertainment and festival amounted to about $5. Mrs. Henry Money, a sister of James W. Jackson, north Walnut street, is visiting in the city. She no a- lives iu Licking, Missouri, and up to last week had not visited her Monroe scanty relatives since 1872. Watt Farmer has traded his farm of 67 acres, 3 miles west of town, for R. T. McCIintcck's farm of 297 acrs near Saltillville, Washington county. He will move in the fall and locate on the Washington county farm.

James M-. Hoggat, a well known Republican politician of Warrick county, died last week. He was a graduate of the law department of Indiana University in 1S65, and a class mate of J. H, Louden and D. O. Spencer. The ordinance against hitching horses to shade trees should be more rigidly enforced. A good many trees. are being injured by thoughtless persons hitching animals that bark the trees and oanse them to decay.

m The report in the Indianapolis papers that Isaac Layden, of Kew Albany, had been chosen a member of the Board of Trustees of Indiana University, is a mistake as there was no election. Abetter selection could not be made, however. Licenses to marry: Tighlman H. Cox to Cordelia Stephens, Cscar L. Hoffman to Rachel W. Leas, Enoch Goss to Emily Baiford, Auburn M. The Evansville and Martin county papers are claiming the tunnel on the Evansville and Richmond railroad, now in course of construction, will be the longest tunnel in Indiana or Ohio, its length being 900 feet This tunnel is small compared with the Edwarisville tunnel on the L. . & St L. The Cross Roads picnic Avas quite a success, though the crowd was not large. Speeches were made by Revs. Minton, Elrod and Mr. R. A. Fulk. Good singing was a feature. Sabbath morning the U. P. church took up a liberal collection for the
