Gov. Forakkr was this week

nominated by the Republicans of Ohio for Governor for the fourth time. Trie first tirao he was defeated, and the following elections was successful by handsome majorities. It was he who replied, "No rebel flags shall be surrendered while I am Governor," when Cleveland issued an order to return the battle flags to

the scnth. He is a brilliant man. The recent prohibitory election in Pennsylvania only demonstrates more clearly the practicability of local option. Nearly half of the counties gave majorities for prohibition, which means that had the question been for or against local option, about half of fehe State would now be under prohibitory restrictions- There is another point: When there is a strong feeling by a majority of the people against any law, that law can not be enforced.

In the fifty-first Congress 10 seats will be occupied by men chosen by 9 plurality of less than 100 votes, 25 whose plurality was less than 500 votes and 40 with les thin lfo90. Princeton College has conferred the degree of L. L. D. on I resident Harrison. The honor ,n this case is not misplaced, for Harrison is a first-class lawyer, unlike so many who have been declared Doctors of Laws who never read a law-book or tried a case.

Mrs. Mary Cooky daughter of Mrs. M. J. McCoy, and twochildern, are visiting Mi's. McCoy, on west 6th. street.

Owixg to the long strikes in the Clay county mines, the condition of the workmen is said to be pitiful. An appeal is being made to the people of tho State for charity. The Telephone does not believe the proprietors of tbe mines are wholly to blame for the condition of affairs. No doubt thv discovery of natural gas has had a wonderful effect to de press tho market. At Indianapolis and many smaller points a dozen cars of coal are not used where two vears ago there were hundreds. All of northern Indiana, that used millions of bushels, now consumes little or none. This must have a serious effect upon the operators. When a company begins to lose money, the men who labor aie the first to feel the loss.

Samuel Uarrah is building a house on Maple Heights and expects to be the origin il resident of this new addition.

ery of natural gas as the somebodys that ma j properly be termed the cros-road "geologists." The discovery of natural gas in Pennsylvania a few years ago was a serious blow to his reputation. Of all the

books that treated on the formation In the last eight years pi

of the eartH and the stratums that followed one upon: another, this "geologist" never otfoe prophesied natural gas. When by accident it was discovered by some men who had never heard of geology, then

ceding

the 1st of January about 124,000,000

acres were settled under the homostead and imbcr culture la s, and at the same rate bv Jnne, 181)0, whn the ii.'w census is taken, the districts will aggregate 150,000,000 acres in ten years. This is an area

ail of the geologist got up on their j T" i V

hind feet and said that it was a result of the coal formation and could not be found anjwher where there was not au abundance of coal. About tbe time those "geologists" were all agreed upon this point, somc men were sinking a well over at Findley,Ohio, and struck a ugusherM A few months later and half a dozen wells were drilled with success in northern Indiana. This made it necessary for tha -"ge jlogist" to try it again. With the same unanimity that the first decision was made, they all decided that there was undoubt

edly natural gas in northern Indiana. 13e that as it may, south of Indianapolis was out of the belt so the geologists said. It was easy enough to agree upon this proposition. About that time several companies were formed to prospect "south of the gas belt," as Ihese geologists said. Now Salem, Hope, Princeton and North Vernon all have strong wells, which indicates that there is gas in every section of the State. The only difference between the man who is a "geologist" and the fellow who is not, seems to be in the ame. The modern geologist is hie the unworthy christian who always finds it necessary to tell those with whom b is associated that he is a church member.

The question of the liability of the South Fork Fishing Club for the

Johnstown disaster is to be tested by litigation. A Johnstown firm which is among the heaviest loser has de cided to bring snit for 150,000, and over a hundred Johnstown merchants have offered to share the expen?. does not ir.dnde the large amount settled up in Texas. This looks as if there.ver still some inducements to go into farming. Public attention has been so directed to the defeat of the prohibitory amendment in Pennsylvania that a vastly more significant defeat has beenenurley overlooked. Under the Constitution no one is permitted to vote whe has not paid the poll-tax assessment against him. The practical result of this has been the gathering in of i large revcnue,at least on election years, but much of it at the expense oi candidates and central committee. To get rid of this burden, the politicians submitted an amendment to do away with this polltax, but the people would not Consent. While in Philadelphia the vote was almost unanimous, the rural districts rolled up u majority against it much above 1000. The question now is, what to do next. The burden has become is tolerable to candidates.

Another warning comes from the cigarette smoking habit of boys. One has died in Philadelphia. In a

treasure the warning will not amount to much, but it is proper to make a note of it at anv rate. Cigarettes will be smoked and boys will die till it is determined which is the litter to survive. ! i Persons who hare a superstitious dread of Friday will be pleased to learn that this vear is a year of Fridays. It came in on Friday, and will go out on Friday, and will have fifty-three of the illomenod days. There are four months in this year that have five Fridays each, and the longest and shortest day of the year each falls on Friday. It will be re

membered that the greatest of all American disasters, the Johnstown horror, occurred on Fridav. - m There are persons who appear soured on everything pertaining to home affairs. They prefer patronizing foreign to home enterprise. They do not like to patronize home papers, or home anybody. They appear to be enemies to their household, enemies to those upon whom they are dependent for their very bread and butter. Any sane man knows that it is to his interest,in every respect,to give support and encouragement to his immediate neighborhood, whose success will at least

improve his own chances of getting

along nicely.
