R. post decided that a building would be preferable to a monument, as it could be used for storing away and exhibiting relics of the war, flags, fcc, as well as a place for post meetings. A dispatch from Washington states that Dr. R. M. Weir has been removed from the pension board and Dr. A. J. Axtell appointed. This will jje a general surprise to the citizens.of Monroe county, as the appointment has been regarded as first class in every respect. The men to ho signed the petition of Br. Axtell originally did not do so out of any ill-will to Dr. Weir, and the influence that has caused a change has been so underhanded and secret that few knew that such an effort was being made. Both were members of the Grand Army, Dr. Weir ftince 1884 and Dr. Axtell since 1887. The letters and papers in the case are being copied and will be here in a few days, when the Telephonic expects to have something further to say. If Dr. Weir or any other man has been removed from office on account ot charges made against his character, he should have a right to defend himself. If he has been guilty of anything that disqualifies htm to hold office, it will be news to the people. M. Volpert makes the best cream end Ices. Ice Cream and Ices at M. Volpert's Bakery. At the regular meeting of the city council Tuesday night Wilson Adams was elected school trustee. In the caucus the names of three candidates were voted for, resulting in 2 votes for Frank It. Woolicv, 2 for Henry C. Duncan and 2 for Wilson Adams. The petitions from the Fire company and hn the citizens asking that Garrison Reeves be re-instated for night policeman were rend and laid on the table bv a uuaninious vote. An ordinance was passed ordering that "IrA street be improved lrom the railroad west to the corporation line. The report of the finance committee was adopted. It increases the salary of the Ma; or from 200 and fees to 8:550 and fees, of the Marshal from :J00 and fees to $2 5 and fees, of the Attorney from 6125 to 6175, of the firemen from $12 to lt per year. This will be an additional expense to the city of about 400, and yet with the in
crease, is the smallest amount paid i
to its oillcers by any city of the size in the State. The salaries could have been near doubled and not have been as hin its when the city was first organized, as the tax duplicate is almost twice as large. The Telijpuonk can find no fault with the action of the council on this question. Doom the town! A meeting of the executive committee of the Improvement Society of College Ave. M. "As but little gas was found at a depth of 703 feet on Friday, it was detei mined to go down still deeper, and Friday night a depth of 17 o feet was reached without an increased flow. The contractor, Mr. Runnels, feeling sure that hhooting the well would result in good, while in Louisville on Friday bought and shipped to Salem a 50-pound cartridge of dynamite and employed an expert to come here on Saturday and shoot it. About ;$00 feet of water was run into the well from the waterworks, the cartridge, a tin tube four inches in diameter and four feet long, was lowered and the fuse lighted. In a few moments a dull thud was felt and barely heard, and great volumes of slush and muddv water were thrown half as iiiijh as the derrick. After this subsided John L Williams advanced to within 10 feet
of the mouth of the well and threw a lighted match over the casing, A (Treat flame shot up, singeing Mr. Williams' whiskers, mustache and hair. The crowd broke forth in a great cheer, which was continued many minutes. There was much danger of the derrick burning, as ail attempts to smother the flames were futile. The hose was turned on the derrick and smoking ropes, and everything made wet. After this, by the aid of wet cloths with heavy boards on top of them, the tlames were subdued."
