UNIVERSITY NEWS.
Prof. Gunn did not meet his classes yesterday. Prof Woodford returned from Virginia vesterdav noon. Mrs. Powman has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Prof. Hoffman, during the past week. Prof. At water was absent Monday and Tuesday attending the funeral, of his mother-in-law in Ohio. Rev. Hi n man, the anti-secret society lecturer, conducted the devotional exercises last Friday morn
ing.
Librarian SpangJer has sent out over 2,000 circulars giving route of the tonr through Europe this summer, of which he is director. Prof. Boone has had different professors lecturing to his class in High School Teaching and it is proving quite a success. J)r. Jordau and Prof. Campbell lectnred this week. The following scholarships have been given and reported from various parts of the State: Guy Howren, Liberty; Alice E. Brass, Lima; and Stella M. Hague, Auburn. A game of ball between the Mitchell nine and the lately organized University club will be played at the old college campus this afternoon. Game called at one o'clock. Admission '25 cents. Dr. J. C. Arthur, professor of Botany; Prof. Creighton, professor of Mechanical Engineering; and Prof. Knauff t, professor of Art, all of Purdue University, visited the university yesterday. It has been suggested that the Board of Trustees select a "10th man" to taks charge of the classes of any of of the professors who may be absent in the future. It is a snap with some students to have no recitations with others it is dead expense. Martins. v i he Republican : W. E. Greenaway has been appointed assistant chief clerk of tne railway mail service at Louisville, Ky. We contra ulatti Will on his appointment. He will make a good one." Mr Greenway will be remembered as a student here in '85.
In speaking of Prof. Bryan's talk before the Mitchell graduating class the Commercial says: '-The address to the class by Prof- W. J. Bryan, of Bloomington University, was oneof the best orations to which we have had the pleasure of listening. It was delivered iu a forcible and pleasing way and merited all the praise bestowed upon it." Dr. Dabnev's classes for the remainder rf the term will be continued under the direction of various persons. Prof. !ryan has charge of the class in Rationalism, bat each day some member of the class directs the recitation of the text. Hereafter it will meet only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Dr. Jordan is teaching the ci$ss in the History of thtf French Revolution and Homer Dibell that in English History. -The trouble and inconvenience, and in some cases sickness, caused by the inability to get heat when it has been wanted of late, has suggested that a different plan would be preferable for the new library building. If any regard is to be had for the health of the students, it is almost absolutely necessary. The library has to be open when other departments are closed. It is frequented by more student and for a longer time than any other department. It needs better ventilation, but by the present means of heating gets very little, if any at all, that is really beneficial. By the Gleamheating process also, the books are injured, which with books obtained like we get ours, little by little and none but what are valuable, should be well considered before fixing such a system for years to come in our r.ew building. If a better method of. heating can b obtained, without any additional cost, it ought to be.
