A Famous Battle-Ground. On the banks of the Tippecanoe, a small stream which enters the Wabash Biver in Indiana, wm fought the terrifio battle of Tippecanoe. In this great straggle of frontier times the allied western Indians, under the chieftainship of Elskwatawa. the "Prophet," were defeated in November, 1811, by the Americans under the command of Gen. Wm. H. Harrison, It was a desperate, hard fought battle, and much depended upon the result. Had the Indians been successful all barriers of defense for the early settlers would have been overthrown, and the deadly tomahawk would have been active in the rapid extermination of the remaining' pioneers. On the other hand, the fortunate termination of the contest put an end to further attempts at open Warfare by the Indians. The rich territory, so long overrun by hostile savages, was thrown open for settlement, which rapidly occurred as soon as the news of the great victory became widespread. Naturally reat praise was rendered to the success and intrepid bravery of Qen. Harrison, and he was honored in many ways. He afterward served as Commander of the Army of the Northwest, and when Indiana was admitted to statehood he was selected to represent the State in the United States Senate. In 1840 he was elected President, and his unfortunate demise occurred shortly after being inaugurated. The forty-second anniversary of the Battle of Tippecanoe found the gallant grandson of "Old Tip" leading his forces to B great political victory, which resulted in the selection of Gen. Ben Harrison as President of the United Stfetos. The Harrisons have been a hardy race of men. sprung from old log-cabin stock, which is a sufficient guarantee of its genuineness wherever found. Realizing the truth of this, great effort has been made to rediscover some of the secrets contained in the old leg-cabin stock of useful articles, and. as the result, the famous Old Log Cabin Sarsuparilla. universally regarded as the best 8prinr tonic and blood cleanser, has been lound. Not satisfied with the world-wide esteem which is held for Warner's Safe Cure, the only cure for kidney diseases, the proprietor is willing to do all that is possible to establish Warner's Log Cabin Sarsaparilla as foremost among household articles on account of its purity and effectiveness. After all, each individual has, at all times, the great battle of life or death to fight, and for security attention must necessarily be given to the best weapons which science can offer humanity in the great contest. The Fateful atfc of March. Mrs. Alex. Hanna, of Apollo, Pa., was born on the 9th of March. She was marriid on the 9th of March. Two of her children were born on the 9th of March, and she died on that day of the month. A brother of hers died on the 9th of March. On the 9th of last March, the ninth anniversary of her marriage, Mrs. Alexander started to visit a relative. As she was crossing one railroad track to get to a train on another she was run over by an Eastern express and instantly killed.

Oar Divorce Laws. As I have said elsewhere, each State of the Union makes its own laws. The result is that a thing which is legal in one State is not necessarily legal in the others. The most curious, and those which differ most are the laws upon marriage and divorce. If it is easy to get married in the United States, it is still more easy to get unmarried. In the State of New York, for instance, if you go to a hotel with a woman, and put down hJIr, So-and-so and wife" on the register, the law looks upon as legally married to that wom an, but the marriage is not recognized as valid in some other States. To obtain a divorce in the State of New York you must jrove infidelity-on the part of your wife; but just across the Hudson, in the State of New Jersey, it is to be obtained on a proof of cruelty or incompatibility of character. If this is not easy enough for you, take the train to Chicago, where divorce is to be had for the asking, almost. The court of divorce in Chicago, called by the Americans "the divorce mill," decided 681 cases during the year 1887. The institution is just as flourishing in the State of -Indiana as in Illinois. The Easterners jokingly pretend that, as the trains roll into the capital of Indiana, the porters cry out. "Indianapolis, twenty minutes for divorce!" so that couples who may have fallen out. on the journey can part company for good. Dojs the husband snore or chew ; has he a disagreeable breath, or et clumsy manner of kissing his wife? Does that lady wear false hair or teeth, .jive her tongue too free play, or habitually take up the newspaper as soon as her husband shows signs of dropping into sentiment? All these offenses are serious ones before the aforesaid tribunals. Without troubling to go and settle in Utah an American may set up a harem of legitimate wives. Each lawful spouse might be a co icubine outside the State she was married in, 'but by carefully studying the laws of the different States Jonathan could, if he pleased, indulge in polygamy without fear of being prosecuted for it. "Jonathan and His Continent" Max O'Bell. A Life Made MJral By dyspepsia is scarcely -worth the Uvintf. A capricious appetite, heart bur a, pulling nervous symptoms, increased action of the Ueart after eating, sinking in the abdorien between meals, and flatulence after, are among the successive indicia of this harassing coir plaint. Two things only are needful for its removal. A resort to Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, and persistence in its use. These remedial measures being adopted, a cure is certain. Taken immediately beta or after meals, this great stomachic promotes secretion of the irastric juice, th natural solvent of the food. The nervous and bilious symptoms consequent upon chronic indigestion dL;apearf as the complaint gradually yj elds to the corrective and invigorating influence ef tte Bitters. Appetite returns, sleepbecon.es more rcfresliing, and as a sequence, the body is efficie ntly nourished, muscular .power increnses, and the znind giows sanguine. Use the Betters for oliilla and fever and rheumatism.

Dangers of Tree Snwiugt In California the saw has largely supplanted the ax in bringing down red-woods, but the change is severe upon the woodsmen. Alter being sawed partly through, a tree is forced over by inserting a number of steel wedges in the kerf, which are driven in with steel sledges. They are set in as close together as possible, and the diiving of the wedges frequently requires three hqurs or more. The constant contact of the steel sledges with the steel wedges resold in chipping off fragments which fly with great force, and in numerous instances become embedded in the flesh of th? workmen, requiring surgical operations to remove them. Many eyes have been lost in this way, while arm and shoulder wounds are frequent. Some means of protection against the uharp missile is needed. North western Lum berm an. $100 Reward $100. now Some Authors Wrote Their Books, Lord Byron puzzled his friends by continual productions while appearing

to occupy himself with everything else

but writing. Hans Christian Andersen had to be alone when he composed his fairy tales. He was never able to dictate a contribution for the press. All his matter for the printer was in his own handwriting. Miss Edgeworth wrote her stories in the common sitting-room, surrounded by her family. Southey could wiite in the presence of his family. A more remarkable method of composition was that of Barry Cornwall. He composed hisbest poems in the busy streets of London, only leaving the crowd to enter a shop to commit to paper the verses he had made. The poet Gray usually worked himself into the "mood" by reading some other poet, generally Spenser. Shelley always composed out of doors or on the roof -tops. Trelawny describes how he found him in a grove near Florence by a pool of water; he wa? gazing unconsciously into the depths. Trelawny did not disturb him, but when Shelley came out of his trance lie had written one of his finest lyrics, in a handwriting that no other man could decipher. Wordsworth mainly composed his poems duriug his rural rambles. It was not an unusual circumstance for him to write with a slate pencil on a smooth piece of stone his newly made lines. Among authors noted as early risers must be included Charles Dickens. -He has told us how the solemn and still solitude of the morning had a charm for him. It was seldom that he wrote before breakfast; as a rule he confined his writing between the hours of breakfast and luncheon. Dickens was by no means a rapid writer. When engaged on a novel he regarded three of his not very largo pages of manuscript a good day's work, and four as excellent. He did not recopy his writing, although they contained numerous corrections, which, however, were clearly made. Dickens love of order was very marked, and his writing materials were always neatly arranged, and his household was a model of order. The highways and byways of London were familiar to him, and many happy hours were spent rambling in them. He had a theory that the number of hours engaged in literary labor should have a corresponding time spent in pedestrian exercise, and he frequently enjoyed a twenty-mile $valk. Thackeray was not very particular as to the place or time when he wrote. He liked to perform his literary labors in a pleasant room. It is certain, from the large number of books that he produced in a limited time, that he must have written at a considerable speed. He had also the happy faculty of being able to clictate Ms works when composing them. Previous to commencing a book, George Eliot would read all she could find bearing on the subject. Sometimes she would study over a thousand works to write one book. She spared no pains in perfecting her productions
