Shrewd drertisers. Headers of the newspapers of the day cannot fail to be impressed with the fact that the modern advertiser is progressive. He is compelled to he. else competitors, more active inhe invention of new advertising devices, will outstrip him in public favor. The value of printers' ink judiciously and cientiflcally employed cannot be overestimated; it is the medium whereby a meritorious discovery is raised from local time to a position in the public esteem. Hence the columns o:' the newspapers are daily used by hosts of advertisers, and in the competition which is indulged in to attain the desired end. the reader is oftentimes amused. The greatest of American advertisers, and it may as well be said in the world, is H. Ht Warner, of Rochester. N. Y.. whose name has been made everywhere familiar in connection with Warner's Safe Cure, widely advertised because of its merit in the prevention and cure of kidney diseases. By printers' ink this great discovery has achieved world-wide popularity, and thousands feel grateful for the knowledge thus acquired of this greatest of modern remedies. Furthermore, the public has been taught that disorders of the lungs, brain, heart, and liver which have hitherto been regarded and treated by the profession as distinctive diseases are not so in fact, but are the attending symptoms of disease of the kidneys: therefore, the consumptive, the apoplectic, the paralytic, and the sufferer from nervous disorders cen be restored to health by Warner's Safa Cure, which will remove the true cause of those disorders by restoring the kidnays to healt hy action. The advertising methods employed by this greatest ol advertisers ore invariably instructive, and. although the reader may sometimes be "caught" in reading an advertisement, which was not at first supposed to be such, there is nevertheless no time lost, since useful information is invariably gained concerning life's great problem. Benefit or a Sponge Bath. A prominent physician, speaking of special baths and their uses, mentions the sponge-bath, the form of bathing where the water is applied to the surface through the medium of cloth or sponge, no part of the body being plunged in the water. He says the practice of systematic daily sponge bathing is one giving untold benefits to its followers. Let a person not over strong, subject to frequent colds from slight exposure, the victim of chronic catarrh, sore throats, etc., begin the practice of taking a spongebath every morning, commencing with tepid water in a warm room (not hot), and following "he sponging with friction that will produce a warm glow over the skin and take five minutes' brisk walk in the open air. See if you do not return with a good appetite for breakfast. After having used tepid water for a few mornings, lower the temperature of the bath until cold water can be borne with impunity. It is estimated that the increase of population in the United States is 100,000 per month, exclusive of immigration, which last year was 518,000. The present population is estimated to be 64,000,000, and the next census, to be taken in July, 1890, will probably give 67,000,000.

! How Women Should Walk. I A woman with a thirty-six inch bust and a twenty-inch waist can never be- ; come a graeeftil walker, says a writer I in the Kansas City Times. Instead of ; turning her right "foot one-half In the i right and her left foot straight out in front, giving the impression that one of i her legs is shorter than the other, i causing her to have a half-rotary, nioi tion at every step, I would teach' her to turn her toes out evenly, about a

quarter say, and step straight out from the hip, touching on the ball of the foot first. But to do this she would be

j obliged to take off her Si 0, with its j French heel, and dou a broad-soled,

low-heeled, sensible No. 4. Graceful walkers who wear French heels exist only in imagination. The length of the step should be regulated by the height and adipose of the lady. Fcr the one in question the stride should be twenty inches the present stride is about fifteen ; for the lady just crossing the track there, the step should be eighteen inches, though with her height, if she were twenty-five pound? lighter, two inches might be added. "By the way," he said, critically, ''that' lady moves with a graceful composure that is really attractive, particularly to one so heavily built. She has a pretty foot, too, 111 warrant, though it is too small for the weight it carries. I knew it," he added triumphantly, as tin? lady in question, who is forewoman in one of the largest dry goods establishments in the city, lifted her ukrrts in crossing a pool of water, displaying a pair of trim No. 3 boots as support for her 180 pounds of avoirdupois. "Did you ever notice the manner in which some women cross a muddy place? Look at that one now," he said, laughingly. A handsomely dressed lady was "undertaking to cross Ninth street. Her right hand holding her muff, she wildly brandished it in the noses of four or five snorting horses, while in her left she nervously grasped the folds of her dress toward the bottom. A pair of trim ankles, black calves and well, some dainty lace frills were in full view on the left side, while on the right her pretty silk gown -was trailing in the mud as she, balancing on her heels, with toes in the sir, was desperately working her way through the mud. The S torn acto Distills Acids. These, if exietent in a natural quantity, and unvitiated by bile, play their part in th 9 functions of digestion and assimilation But the artificial acid resulting from the inability of the stomach to convert food received by it, inso sustenance, Is the producer of flatulence and heartburn, which are the most harassing symptoms of dyspepsia. The beat carminative is Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. For more effec tive is it than carbonate of soda, magnesia, or other alkaline salts. These in variably weaken tho stomach without producing permanent benefit. No man or woman chronically dyspeptic, and consequently nervous, can be in possession of the fuU measure of vigor allowed by nature. Therefore, invigorate and regulate the systom, and by so doing protect it from malaria, rheumatism, and other serious maladies.

Barmah's Hairy People. A remarkable hairy family has long existed at the. court of Burmah, where Lord Crawford saw Shwe Maong, the first described of the family, in 1824. A hairy daughter now sixty-four vears old and a hairy grandson of the nairy Shwe Maong and his bea-utiiul wife still survive, a hairy great-granddaughter having died last year. Several other children of tlje family have shown a tendency to develop the peculiarity, but died when quite young, and ethers have-exhibited only normal-hairiness The surviving man is thickly covered with cftarse, goajb-like hair on the entire face, neck, shoulders, breast; and spine, and with a kind of down, two inches long on the limbs. The hair hiding the woman's face is much finer, resembling that of the spaniel. Neither has hair on the hands and feet. They have no molar teeth, and in tho upper jaw have only the two first incisors and two canines. Arkansaw Traveler. Deafness Can't Be Cured. "Never; but I got it worse than being bitten. Dog-gone my buttons, but when I thiuk of it I lose a foot in length and get a mouth as dry as last years cotton !" "What was it?" "Well, one night last summer I camped down alter a hard day's ride aud slept the sleep of the just. I kept my eyes shut most of the time, but I could trace his movements by the sense of feeling. About 9 o'clock a second spider put in an appearance and begged the honor of knifing me, but my old friend objected and they had a lively set-to on my stomach. The neMr-comer was knocked out in the third round and M ent off for repairs." "And you didn't spring up and dash the tarantula aside?" "Did you ever spring out of the way of a bullet, young man? I couldn't have gathered myself before he'd have popped it to me full figures. No, sir. I just laid thar and waited for him to get tired and go. He finally went, but I couldn't say hoMr far, and I hadn't moved a finger M'hen a couple of cowboys rode up. Then I jumped clear of the blanket and told my story, but they wouldn't believe it."
