Extraordinary License "It teems to me." remarked one of our aitizens the other day, "that physicians are allowed extraordinary license In the manner in which they juggle with the welfare of their patients. "Now, here la Dr. . Who was attending Mr. up to the time of his death, and it he treated him for one thing he treated him for a dozen different disorders, first the doctor said pneumonia was the trouble; then it was consumption. Then the patient was dosed for heart trouble, and so on, until just before he died it was ascertained that disease of the kidneys was the real trouble, and that which had been at first treated as pneumonia, consumption, heart disease, etc.. were hut the symptoms of kidney disease. "But then it was too late. "This is only one cae in a hundred, and lam beginning to lose faith in the doctors altogether. In fact. I haven't had any need tor tfclr services since X began to keep Warners Safe Cure in my house, a little ver three years ago. Whenever I feel a little out of sorts I take a few doses of it, confident that the source of all disease is in the kidneys, which I know Warner's Safe Cure will keep in irood order, and will eradicate any disease that may be lurking there. Had Mr. followed a similar course, I ha re no doubt he would be alive to-day; bvfc, of eevss. all people don't think alike. "One thing is certain, however, and that Is the doctors are allowed a little too much freedom in the way thy have of pretending to know that which thay really know nothing about If they don't know what is the real trouble with the patient, they should admit it and not go on and experiment at the cost of the patient's life." Women teach tis repose, civility, and dignity," says Yoltaire. It is evident that Voltaire never stepped on a lady's foot in a crowded car. Lite would he one delightful slide if we did not have to drag our sleds back up the hill.

The Arabians. The Arabs of the early centuries of the Christian era were , like the Arabs of to-day, a nomadic people, "warlike, imaginative, intelligent, hut uncultivated, because they had never come in contact with the people of other nations, and they knew nothing of the great classic peoples and their workn. In 569 A. D. Mohammed was born at Mecca. A man of great personal influence, having a deeply religious nature and being inspired wiuh the idea of the uifity of God, he converted the gi'eat mass of the Arabian people from fetichism and united them as followers of his religion, which had for its simple creed, "There is but one God, and Mohammed is his prophet." He made this union stronger by giving to the people, in the Koran, which claimed to be of divine origin, many rules and precepts applicable to common life. Tims Mohammed accomplished his great work, and the Arabs became, for the first time, a nation, instead of isolated cla i3. The Koran urged especially the necessity of engaging in war, and with all the enthusiasm which the new sense of national unity gave them the Arabs entered upon their wonderful career of conquevst. They conquered, in rapid succession, Palestine, Syria, Mesopotamia, Persia, Egypt, Africa and Spain. The intellectual development of the Arab begins at this time, and the rapidity of this development is remarkable. It is said, "They overr an the domain of science as rapidly as they overran the domain of their neighbors. Learning was encouraged by tho ruleni both by precept and example. Let us now turn our attention to the condition of Europe at this time. In writing of one of tho Arabian cities Draper says : "It boasts of more than two hundred thousand houses and more than a million of inhabitants. After
sunset a man might walk through it in a straight line for ten miles by the light of public lamps. Sev en hundred years after this there was not as much as one public lamp in London. Itu streets were solidly paved. In Paris, centuries subsequently, whoever stepped over his threshold on a rainy day stepped up to his ankles in mud." While the lower classes of the Mohammedans lived in the greatest luxury, the dwellings of the rulers of Germany, France and England were scarcely better than stables chimuevless. window less and with a hole in the roof for the smoke to escape ; and this difference shows well the difference in the intellectual attainments of the two peoples Exchange. Hard to Identify the White Skins. Nothing is more common than for Europeans to complain of the difficulty they have in individualizing men of dark races who, to the eye of the white man, seem all more or less alike, says the London Globe. The natives of
India have apparently the same difficulty with white men. Some men of the Lancashire regiment stationed at Benares recently broke loose and raided liquor shops in a neighboring village. Some of the culprits were so drunk that the authorities easily discovered them, but sin order to spot the remainder the regiment was paraded, and the villagers were asked to point out the guilty men. They absolutely failed to do so in a single cases whereupon a native paper, commenting on the incident, says : "Not a doubt of it. One of the most difficult feats under the sun is to identify Europeans they are so much alike with their loud, glaring white color. We wonder whether their friends and relations are at a loss as to who's who ?w
A Terrible Miitfortune. It is a calamity of tbe direst kind feel tht-t one's physical energies are failing in the prime of life to feel more narveloss, more dispirited, weaker every day. The greenish color of certain sloths was found some years ago to be due to a parasitic growth of algae ipon the hair. Two genera and three sipecies of these minute plants one genus green, and the other, with its two species, violet have since been described by Madam Weber von Bosse. ESQUIMAU ADDITION. The Clumsy Numerals Used by Dwellers In the Far Nortln The ape which (or, perhaps, whom) Mr, Romanes has succeeded in teaching to count five seeing, to tread closely on the heels of some of the races of
men. In a. paper on tho Esquimau of Point Barrow, Mr. John Murdoch, of the National Museum, said that, like the rest of those peoples, they ordinarily do not use numbers greater than-live, but speak of six autl all higher numbers as 44 many." Their real numbers are one, two, three, four, five, ten (which rueami the upper part of the Iwdy, namely, the number of digits on the upper extremities), fifteen (perhaps), and twenty (which means "a man complete," i. e., all his digits used up). These numbers are almost identical with those used in the other dialects, while the intermediate numbers are quite different, though expressed in a similar manner : that is to sav, "so many on the next hand or foot." With such clumsy numerals, arithmetical processes are practically impossible, though they practice a sort of crude addition, arriving at the number of a large series of objects by grouping them together in fives. In counting, the ordinal numerals are used. This is also the same as in tie other dialects. Thev origin all v had no standard of dimensions for space, but of late years have learned to use the fathom in trading for cloth, etc. Time is measured by the sun and stars. For example, the star Arcturus is the geal-netters' timepiece. When he is in the east, dawn is near, and it is time to stop fishing. The year is divided into four seasons early winter, winter, earlv summer and summer. Nine lunar months are known by name. The rest of the vear "there is
no moon, only the sun." They begin to count the moons from the early autumn, the time when the women go off into the little tents to work on deer-skins. The first moon roughly speaking, October is "the time for working" i. eM sewing; November, "the second time for sewing;" December, "the time for dancing" (this is the season ol the great semi-dramatic festivals); January, "great cold," or little sun" (in this moon the sun just reappears at noon; February, "the time for starting" (on the winter deer hunt); March, "the time for starting home;" April, "the time for making ready the boats" (for whaling); May, "the time for fowling," and June, "the time for bringing forth young" (when the birds lay eggs). Thev clearlv distinguish "to-dav," "yesterday," and "to-morrow;" but "dav before vesterdav" and "dav after to-morrow are the same ; and beyond that all is "some time ago" or "some time he ace" (the same word), till it gets to be "long ago" or "by and by," Then where are no dates ijx their past or future, except what has happened or is to happen. -Science. Ups and Downs. During a hard winter a revsrnd gentleman in the country being apprehensive that the accumulated weight of snow upon the roof of his barn might do some damage, resolved to shovel it off. But for fear the snow might slide off all at once, and himself with it, he fastened to his waist one end of a rope, and, throwing the other end over the ridge of the roof, told his wife to hold it. He then went to work; but fearing still for his safety, "My dear," said he, "perhaps you had better tie the other end of the rope round your waist." No sooner had she done so than down came tL-3 snow, minister r-n$l all, and up went his wife. Thus, ou one side of the barn hung the unfortunate clergyman, and on the other side his wife, each dangling at one end of the rope. We believe they have been rescued since. Novel Defense and Verdict An Alabama man, charged with stealing a calf, mado the following statement: "I was always teached to be honest, an' most always have been, but when I seed that calf I caved. I never wanted a calf so bad in all my life, an' you all know that when a man wants a calf he wants him." The jury returned the following verdict: "We, this jury, air satisfied that Steve stole that calf, but, as the feller that owned the animal is considerable of a slouch, we agree to clear Steve an' make the owner pay the costs."
