Jack Tar's Superstition. Among beliefs current among sailors is the notion .that it is unlucky to turn a loaf upside down after helping oneself from it, the idea being that for every loaf so turned a ship will be wrecked. It ia also said that if a loaf parts in the hand while being cut it bodes dissensiors in the family the separation of husband and wife. Again, it has long been a widespread belief that the whereabouts of a drowned body may be ascertained by floating a loaf of bread down a stream, when it will stop over the spot where the body is. A curious account of a body thus recovered near Hull appeared some years back in the Gentleman's Magazine. After diligent search had been made in the river for the child to no purpose, a two-penny loaf, with a quantity of quicksilver put into it, was set floating from the place where the child was supposed to have fallen in, which steered its course down the river upward of half a mile, when, the body happening to lie on the contrary side of the river, the loaf suddenly tacked about and swam across the river, and gradually sank near the child, when "both the body and the loaf were brought Sup with the grapplers ready for the ipurpose." A correspondent of Notes and Series maintains that it is a scientific fact that a loaf and quicksilver indicates the position of the body, as the weighted loaf is carried by the current just as the body is. This practice, too, prevails on "the continent, and in Germany the name of the drowned person is inscribed on the piece of bread, while in France loaves consecrated to St. Nicholas, with a lighted wax taper in them, have generally been employed for that purpose. : Ladt friend "What is the hardest thing connected with vour editorial duties, Mr. Iiumpley?" AN OPEN QUESTION. mil mmm Is Harrison a 'Degcendant of Pocahontas? It is popularly believed that President Harrison is descended from. Pocahontas and from tho Parliamentary soldier and regicide General Thomas Harrison, who wan executed in 1660. Pocahontas, daughterof Powhatan, rnanifested a friendliness for the early whito settlers of Virginia when she was but i.grirl. The story ot how she saved the life of Cap
tain John Smith, who had been cap:ured i
ana condemned to death by her father -how she, on several occasions, made known to the settlers their danger when utoout to be attacked is well known to all acquainted with the early history of America. Her subsequent marriage with John Rolfe. an Englishman her removal to England, where a son was born, from whom numerous wealthy lamilies of Virginia claim descent is the basis of the opinion that President Harrison is one of her descendants. Whether this be true or not, it is, however, -uvll known that President Harrison is a descendant ot a notud family, distinguished alike in peace and war. The name of Harrison is already indelibly written upon the pages of American hisnry, for General William Henry Harrisonthe ninth Pi esident of the United States was the grandfather of Gen. Ben Harrison. Tho election of another member of tho Harrison family is but another proof of the prevailing disposition of the public to return to healthy administration of public afllSrs so characteristic of the earlier years of government A similar desire has been manifested for a revival of. early manners and customs in many various" ways, of which mention in parK alar can be made of the prevailing demand for those old-time preparation which wore so successfully employed in the prevention and cure c lio ills and ailments which frequented the carty log-cabin homes. Aftar much inqmiry and research, a noted manufacturer has procured the original mothoas used in their preparation, and again, under the name of Warner's Log Cabin Remedies, the public is possessed of those well-known preparations for the cure of coughs, colds, consumption in its oarly stages, blood disorders, catarrh, dyspepsi. debility, and other common dlsorcfcrp. Notwithstanding the large amount of time, attention, and expense which the manufacture of Warner's Sa e Cure demandsits well-known reputation as the oniy remedy for the prevention and cure of kidney diseases being world wide the inanufacturer is resolved to push the merit of Warner's Log Cabin Sarsaparilla to the front, because of its splendid blood-purifying properties and great value as a household remedy and spring-time system renovator. Pocahontas, during her life-long friendship for the white settlers of Virginia, besides her many acts of kindness, is said to have contributed much valuable information to the log-cabin home concerning the successful methods employed by the Indians in tho treatment of disease, and it matters little whether the aliezed relationship between herself and the President be true or not. for the name of Pocahontas is already immortal.
A HOLE UNDER A ROCK.
It "was not until last year that the Moors would permit any examination of the cliff dwellings w hich have been known to exist some days' journey southw est of the city of Morocco. This strange city of the cave dwellers is almost exactly like some of those in New Mexico and other Territories which archsr ologists have explored. The dwellings were dug out of the solid rock, and many of them are over 200 feet above the bottom of the valley. The face of the cliff is in places perpendicular, and it is believed that the troglodytes could have reached their dwellings only with the aid of rope ladders. Some of the dwellings contain three rooms, the largest of which is about 17x7 feet, and the walls of the larger room? are generally pierced by windows. Nothing is known as to w ho these cave dwellers were. A Terrible Misfortune. A curious freak of memory is that of forgetting words of a poem or speech which has been said over a great number of times. The leading lady of a play which has been performed 700 times cannot remember her lines, even by the most violent effort, and only complete rest of a day or two would recall them. Another actress in a play which had a great run had to be constantly prompted toward the end, rehearsed every day, and yet was constantly pursued by a terrible consciousness that what she was saying to the audience was simply unmeaning gibberish. How an Inquiring Man Madia a Fortune Out of It, It certainly does take a Yankee for luck. Over in Hnntsvillo, a few years ago, a Minnesota man by the name of Fuller bought a few acres of land and plauted it in fruit. If was his inten tion to mae Huntsville his home, and to do what lie could to promote the fro it-growing industry of that section of Alabama. His property was on the side of a hill, and, after he had taken possession, he discovered what seemed to lea deep hole under one of the rozks. Ho began inquiries among the neighbors about this hole, and found that nobody had ever had the nerve to investigate it, but all seemed to think it might bo a little cave in the sid of the ;iill such as every hilly country furnish s. But .Fuller was not satisfied. He brought with him from the North that inquiaitiveness which is suppoe'd to be a characteristic of the typical Yankee, so he determined to invo itigate this hole in the ground for himseL ; he did so, and on December 31st last, he sold this hle and a few acres of land surrounding it for $36 J, 000. He had discovered one of the most notable caverns in the Southern States. This was Shelta Hock. It took its came from Mr. Fuller's daughter, Miss Shelta Fuller, who iB one of th? prettiest young women about Huntsville; and whether it is the name or just the Yankee luck which brought tho good foitune, it is certain that this hole has proved more than a gold mine to the man who discovered it. The writer was so fortunate as to be one of the first to make an exploration of these caverns after the electric light had been put in, and other elaborate preparations for the reception of guests had been made. The main cavern is wonderful for its size, and it is said to be larger than any othr one cavern in the United States. There are from it passage-ways leading to smaller caverns and points of interest, and there is what seems to be quite a large lake, but which had not, at that time, been explored. The company purchasing it is composed of Iowa and Minnesota capitalists, and they contemplate the erection of a fine winter and summer hotel at the cavern, a dummy line from Huntsville, and many other improvements calcu'ated to make the place an attractive resort. Mr. Fuller's luck and enterprise have made him a half-millionaire, and he will probably enjoy life in his own way, while the new company takes all the risk of booming the resort Atlanta Constitution. Mountain Air The health-giving inifcience of mountain air lias long been recognized, but the most emphatic indorsement of the "Highland Cure Plan" is now furnished by the report of Prof. C. M. Woodford, who passed several months among the cannibals of the Solomon Islands. The main island of the group, he informs us, is inhabited by connoisseurs in manmeat, who select their victims from the hill tribes of the neighboring isles, having found their flavor as superior to that of the coat-dwellers as venison is to veal. The benedicts of the archipelago probably board their mothers-in-law at some sonveniens highland report before salting them down for winter use. Detroit Free Press.
A Masculine Woman. During the war there was torn in Americus, Ga., a child baby that became the pet of the town. The girl grew to girlhood, and after reaching her teens was sent off to n prominent female seminary in this State to receive the finishing touches in her education. Of course she associated and roomed with the other girls, and finally graduated, lint on her return home yon can judge the surprise of the people of Americus when she donned male attire and appeared upon the streets as sprightly a little dude as you would en re to see. She cut the acquaintance of the girls as associates and went exclusively among the boys, adopting their habits and manner. Afterward this strange being moved to Macon, (ia., where it opened a re-daurant in the car shed, and did business there for several years. It was looked upon and recognized as a man, and indulged in all the dissipations characteristic of the sex. It afterward courted and married a young lady of Macon, but after living together as man and wife for several months the bride returned to her parents, but gave the world no reason for her voluntary se paration.
