The "mite" society of the Christian church at the home of Prof, and Mrs. Amzi Atwater Monday evening proved of more than "ordinary interest. Mrs. A. B. Philputt, the wife of the former pastor of the congregation was present, and before ti e company was dismissed for the evening it was announced that Mrs. Atwater had a few words of
farewell that she desired to address to her. Mrs. Atwater in very appropriate words fpoke of the great assistance that Mrs. Philputt had been in the church work, how she had
helped build up the congregation, not only by the strong aid given to" her husband while pastor of the
church, but by her individual effort and interest in the work f the
church. Iu was the desire of the
ladies to present her a slight token as theii appreciation of her work something that would often remind her of the pleasant days spent in the church work in hioofiiingtoo Mrs. Atwater then presented to her a handsome set of garnets. Mrs. Philputt responded very kindly to the kind remembrance shown by the ladies, and assured them that she could never forget the pleasant associations with the con
gregation at Bloomington. A gold

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fess were the
'victims of a genuine surprise Mon
day evening. Fred was just prepar
ing to take "King's excuse" for the night, whei a knock at the door was heard. Upon opening the door a large crowd of friends faced him and w ere not slow to give out the information that all the trouble was
cuisedby his 41st birthday. The

Kioomiugiou now has four brass bands: the Mechanics, the Colored Band, the Juuevik- Comet Band and also a Juvenile Colored Hand. The latter organization received their horns this week and is under the
leadership of Lewis Johnston. According to the new law passed by the last legislature, there will be no more court in Monroe county until the first Monday in September, except the special term at which only the cases designated in the notice can be tried.
Miss Cora Woollley is the teacher of the infant class of the Methodist Sunday school, ani last Monday evening entertained the little ones at her home, corner of 8th and Lincoln streets. It wm an unusually pleasant occasipn, whtoh is best described in tlae expression of one of the children that he "had two dishes of ice cream."'
One of the pleasant occasions of laKt week was the 17th anniversary of tho marriage of Charley C. Turner and wife, last Thursdav evening. It was in the nature of a surprise, the invitations having been sent out by Mrs. James Hooper and Mrs.
WiH Turner. The company met at
the residence of Thomas A len, then proceeded to Mr. Turner's home. Excellent refreshments had also been prepared by the ladies sending
out the invitations, so there was nothing wanting to make the evening's pleasure complete. A number of gifts were presented.
