Electric Bugs Since electric lights ware iatrodnoed jti Georgia large gray bugs have become common. They are called electric bugs. The other evening John McLaughlin of Savannah was sitting by an open window and one of these bugs, about two inches long, flew in and striking the wall fell to the floor. McLaughlin picked it up to throw it out of the window and the bug sank its claws into his hand He said the sensation was as though several fishhooks were being pulled through the arm. Immediately his hand began to awell and small pimples appeared on his hand, arm, and face within twentyfour hours. For over a week the hand and arm were very sore, and at one time the ease looked dangerous.

Tbe Gcneain of American Liberty. Governor Morris dated American liberty, not from the Stamp Act of 1765, but from the prosecution of Peter Zenger in 1737, on the charge of libeliiicr the Governor of New York and his
oftioial friends. William Cosby was
the Governor. He was an irritable man, who, having been sent to the colony to mend his broken fortune, did much to hasten colonial emancipation. Ifncrapulous and avaricious, he insisted on new surveys of land and new gvants, in order that ho might clutch at great perquisites. "Do you think I mind that?" he answered those who objected that the Governor was acting against law. "I have great interest in knglaud." The New York Weekey Journal was established to defend the cause of the people against the arbitrary Governor, who was trying to play the part of a petty tyrant. Its squibs and satires upon Crosby and his council provoked the authorities to order certain copies of the Journal to be publicly burned ly the hangman, and its publisher, John Peter Zenger, to be thrown into prison. Zenger was charged with publishing false and seditious libels against the Government. As the Grand Jury refused to find a bill against him, the Attorney General filed an information. The case excited intense interest, for it involved liberty of speech and of the press, and all the central colonies regarded the controversy as ttteir own. Jsmes Alexander, Zenger's counsel md the leading lawyer of the colony,
took exceptions to the validity of tne commission of the Chief Justice, De Lancey, and the legality of proceeding by information instead of by indict-raent-I)e Lancey refused to receive the exceptions. "You thought," said he to Alexander, to have gained a great deal of applause by opposing this court; but you have brought it to this point, that either we must go from the bench, or you must go from the bar." He then issued an order excluding Alexander from any further practice in tiiiat court. The "Sons of Liberty" then brought tiie foremost lawyer oc the country, Andrew Hamilton from Philadelphia to plead Zenger's cause. When the distinguished advocate entered the courtroom, those who were present rose to their feet, waved their hats, and shout
ed loud huzzas. Chief Justice De Laneev frowned angrily, and demanded silence. The prisoner pleaded "Not guilty," admitting the publication of tin alleged libel, and justified it by asserting its truth. Those were the days when the legal doctrine was that "the gi eater the truth the greater the libel." When Hamilton offered to prove that the allege 1 libel was justided, the Chief Justice interrupted him, saying: "You cannot be Admitted to give the trnth of a libel in evidence." "Then," said Hamilton, turning to the jury, "we appeal to you for witnesses of the facts. The jury have a light to determine both the law and the fact, and they ought to do so. The question before you is not the cause of Bi poor printer or New York alone ; it is the cause of liberty the liberty of opposing arbitrary power . by speaking and writing truth." The Chief Justice charcred against
the prisoner and the doctrines of his
few minutes ieturned a verdict of "Not guilty." The audience, shouting approval, bore Hamilton out of the court-room tinon their shoulders. The Common
Council of New York gave him the freedom of the city in a gold box for his gratuitous services in "defense of the rights of mankind, and the liberty of the press." That verdict was a prophecy to those who could read it of colonial independence. It was the hand-writing on the wall, but there was no Daniel, in whom England had confidence,' to interpret it. Youth's Companion. - ,t The Great Snowy Owl. The winter or late autumn brings, at times, a visitor from the far north, the great snowy owl, Nycteanivea. I came upon him the other day crouched in the long, dead grass which whistled in the cold wind, while the snow sq;:alls swept alocg the far horizon; he turned his great -bL ck eyes on me for a moment and took wing. No bird that I ever saw has such motive power, the Jirst flap of his broad wings Binds him far forward or upward. Nothing reminds you of the steady, straight Wight of his congeners; he bounds up and siwoops down, turning in any direction with all the ease and lightness of the swallow, A few secondhand his great bulk is a speck in the horizon, a moment more and he has vanished, while you still stand gazing in wonder at his frace and speed and power. lie certainlv has hid all reason to fort fro his
southern trip; .when the arctic winter comes on breadths of latitude can be nothing to him. A few davs. or a fort
night at most, will allow him lo pass over the stretch that separates his arctic home from us, and still give him time for rest and feeding by the way. His natural vigor and power ot wing is so great that the severe cold of the sab-polar regions, and the passage of the great distance that separate? it from us, are both sustained with ease, evidently, by this magnificent bird. VicJe's Magazine. A Fatal Likeness Fond mother Isn't he a lovely boy, Doctor? The doctor Well, I should nay so. Speaking of babies, dear mo, you should have seen that Smith young one that lives near me. He'd been eating huckleberry pie and got it all in his hair. Fond mammar- Goodness, what color is his h&ir? Men Who Create. I like the men of the lwoiftioti w 10 fought- the war, mado an elastic Constitution that could bo amended, and then went away, leaving the. country to children who "would take care of it That was a fine piece of work done
that Jefferson and Adams siaw with closing eyes. A country born and set on its foet, and going alone with a Constitution that fitted not like a fetter but like a skin. Why should a man die with a faint hope that his intentions maybe c?.rrid out by heirs? Why not begin earlier and carry them out himself? Say, like Cicsar Augustus, "I found Home baked mud and left it marble." Money is helpless stuff in the hands of the careless, the indifferent, and the
! feable-minded. The text says man
piles it up, and he cannot tell wno shall gather it. The newspaper says the same thing in its reports of suits brought to break wills. I desire Mr. Stanford, of California, to hurry his $20,000,000 universitythere is nobody who can or will attend to that thing tor him as w ell as he can for himself. The man who endowed our manual training school is alive. Mr Coggswoll, of San Francisco, last year put $1,000,000 into a school tor his city. He is alive, and is overseeing the business. Living men of San Diego are now building a $2,000,000 school for children of all ages and both sexes mainly, but not exclusively, of the "dependent class," intended to equip them for work in all directions. It seems to me that I would prefer to build an observatory, buy the telescope and hang it and look through it a few times myself while I am under the stars, to the old method of leaving the money to an executor to do the thing for me when I am gone beyond the stars. Why not have the joy of doing the thing instead of a faint hope of hearing that it has been done, and a probability-of hearing that it has not been done at all, and that th plaintiff or defendant has moved for a new trial. Rev. Myron W. Reed.
How Petroleum Is Produced. "Thothaorv is lv 11 bv Prof. Mvm-
! doleef." savs J row-, "that petroleum is
produced by water, which penetrates ; tbe earth's crust, and comes in contact j with glowing carbides of metals, especially those of iron. The water is de
composed into its constituent gases, the oxygon uniting with the iron, while the hydrogen takes up the carbon, and ascends to a higher region, where part of it is condensed into mineral oil, and part remains as natural gas, to escape wherever and wheneVer it can find an outlet. If this assumption is correct, and a sufficient store of metallic carbides is contained in the earth's interior, petroleum may continue to bo formed almost indefinitely, and yield a supply of fuel long alter coal has become exhausted. Prof. Mendeleof supports his views by iwoducing artificial petroleum in a manner similar to that by which he believes the natural product is made."
