FOR MURDER.

Trial of Chas. Lease.

A CASK VKNUED FROM SPENCER.

THE DePAUW WILL CONTEST.

The time of the court is now being occupied by the Lease murder trial, venued from Spencer, and it is full of interest. From the statements made, that follow, will be found the nature of the charges. Charles Lease, the defendant, is not over 25 years old, is small in stature and not a bad looking fellow. Re has three sisters, very nice looking, who are with him all the time during tbe trial. Among the witnesses for the defense is Wm. Baugh, who only a few days ago killed John Morgan, a respectable citizen of Spenser, and will likely find his future journey more difficult than that of Mr. Lease. W. K. Asher made the opening statement to the jury for the prosecution. He said the killing occurred in Spencer, July 31st, 1886, before a few eye-witneBBe. Philip Dix and the defendant were in a saloon and had been drinking Lease was in toxicatcd. After going out, words were passed orar a boy, about 16 years old, also somewhat intoxicated. Lease pushed the boy (Thomas) down just outside of the saloon ; Dix told him he could not run over a boy while he w as around. In front of Overstreet'a store Lease again pushed the boy down; Dix said he "oughtn't to do that"; at this the defendant then stabbed Dix, he alleging that Dix had struck him. The wound passed through the lungs and diaphragm, entering the stomach, being about 1 inches deep and 2 inches long. He died on the 7th day of August, iu a boarding houe, he being a workman on the I. & V. railroad. Mr. Dix wart a

j peaceable and tow-abiding citizen.

Willis Hickam in the statement for the defense, said it would be proreu that another person shoved the boy down, and that Lease killed Dix in self defense The dying statement of the murdered man read before the jury was as follows: "Knowing that I am at tho poin t of death and that all hope of life hi
