NOTES ABOUT THE 'AIAKMS AND MASTERS.

On last Monday morning at 9 o'clock the teachers of Monroe county met in their annual convention at the high school chapel. Wh Superintendent Craven called the Institute to order, there were present near one hundred, and this number was increased to one hundred and twenty-tive before the day closed. This is th-a largest first-day attendance that has ever been at a Monroe county institute. For principal sec retary, Miss Maggie Porch was chosen, and for enrolling secretary, U. H. Smith was &osen. The Superintendent then made a short address upon the important e of constant attendance and close attention, after which Prof. Lugenbeel gave

an interesting talk upon the- subject rived Uiursduy and give instruction ou

volumes. This prize was a gift of the Faris Bros. The second prize was a handsome book entitled "The Confessions of a Society Man". The third prize was Eben IugersolPs "Crest of the Continent". FIFTH pay's work. Miss A. Kate Huron, of the Danville Normal College, was present, and gave interesting exercises throughout the day. Professors Heck "and Lugenbeel continued their work in the common branches. In the afternoon the trustees; wore present and entertained the Institute with talks upon educational matters. Attendance for the day, 190. At 7.o0 in the evening the college chapel was crowded almost to suffocation. The program wa a rmv excellen one and was thorougiiiv enjoyed. The complete program has appeared in these columns before. today's woiik. Professors Heck, Lugenbeel mid Miss Huron will have charge of the work to-day.
