Unknown Man Killed by a train

WHILE RUNNING AT FULL SPEED.

XO EVIDENCE BY WHICH TO IDENTIFY HIM.

Yesterday about noon an unknown man was instantly killed by freight train on Smithville hill, Slid not an item of evidence could be found with which to identify him or his whererabouts. The train was running at full peed when the engine became uncoupled from the following cars; it had run perhaps 100 yards south when a man was noticed on the track, walking south. At a whistle from the engine the man Stepped to one side as the engine as$o, when he stepped back on the track. The engineer knew the impending danger and whistled a warning, but it was of no avail for the fast coming cars that had broken loose were soon upon him. The brakeman that stood upon the foremost car hollowed loud, but the man evidently did not hear or was intent upon suicide, as he kept in the middie of the track. The cars struck him n an instant, mangling his body in a terrible manner; below the el est the body was cut in a hundred pieces, the entire train running Over him. 'Ihe remains were gathered up and taken to Harrodsburg, where 'Squire Carr held the inquest. A part of the Monroe County Citizen bearing on the margin the name of Mrs. P. G. Mathews, also a piece of the Chicago ATeirs, and a pair of eye-glasses, unbroken, were found on his person. He was a man about dO vears old, o feet 5 inches hish, weighed perhaps 140 pounds, dark complected with gray curly hair and beard. Only a short time before his death, he stopped at the house of Adams Ileiing, asking for a drink, and stated that he was from the North and goinj South. He was evidently a stranger, on his tiresome journey, when nnlooked for, the dreaded messenger overtook him.

The remains were placed in a pine box? when the strange man was carried to the Harrodsburg cemetery and laid away by unknown friends in an unmarked grave a tramp.

DEATH OF LOTTIE STEINHAGEN. (Aug. 25, 1887.) Among the sad events of the summer in our community, one of the maddest is the death of the subject of this sketch. No one who knew little Lattie could fail to be attracted and pleased by her remarkable face and unusual intelligence. Her face was on? which would be noticed in any company of children whether in Sunday school or day school; her intelligence readily comprehended anything in her hooks or in the explanation of her teachers. The ready and pleased attention of aucIi a child is a stimulus to a teacher to make the instruction worthy of class and school. Lottie was born in 1; ay etteville, Lawrence Co., Aug. :4th, 1877. She camo to Bloomington with the family in 1884. Her hie here in her homejn the hearts of her parents, in school, in her Sunday school class, among her playmates and with her little brother and sister has been of almost ideal perfection. In school, sfce took one of the honors of her room. In Sunday school her understanding was above her years. Her presence ha been J ike a gleam of sunshine, her feet have run swiftly in the ways of well doing. To the younger children she has been a wise guardian, to those of her own age, an inspiring compun ion and to her mother she has been a great helper. To all, her life has been a thing of beauty and a joy forever. The going on before us of such a lovely child adds an attraction to the world of the blessed. A. A.

As has been the custom for more than a dozen veaivs. w annual old settlers' meeting was held at the Ketcham Springs lasi Saturday and Sunday. The springs are about nine union southwest oi .Bloomington and five miles north of Harrodsburg, near a pleasant grove, and though unhandy to reach is a very pleasant place for such a gathering. These meetings were begun many years ago and were inaugurated by Rev. Martin Fulk, now deceased, and at these springs was held the first old settlers' meeting ever held

under that name in Indiana. The attendance this year Mas eqiul to the average, if not better. On Sundav it is estimated that 3,000 people were present. Saturday the attendance was not so large, but was as large as usual on that day. The Harrodsburg band was present and at suitable times rendered good music. This band has

outgrown the ordinary brass band and plays some excellent selections. Added to this music was a juvenile choir, from Harrodsburg, trained by Miss Allie Cully, that was highly complimented. In the morning the audience was addressed by Richard A. Fulk, who is one of the bovs himself, that is he has been a settler

in Monroe county for more than half a century, and he entertained the audience with reminiscences interesting alike to old and young. In the afternoon C. R. Worrall, at the request of the committee, gave a short talk that was more especially adapted to the young, and he had his audience laughing until he took his seat. He spoke more especially of the rush and hurry of the times, and it was getting so that a man canld ix t take time even to attend an old settlers meeting without

getting behind the procession ; the !

old folks had stopped by the wayside and none had time to step back and see them and shake them by the hand, so mad was the rush for fame and fortune. Mr. Worrall was followed by Wm, P. Rogers, who took for his theme the result of life and why was man created. He read his address, aud it showed extraordinary thought and care. He dealt entirely with the problem of life, and what he said was the cause of many compliments. Persons from Bloomington w ho heard it have suggested that Mr. Rogers should be invited to deliver the address from the chapel some Sunday afternoon. On Sunday the attendance was very huge and exceedingly orderly. Rev. Stackhouse, from Greene county, delivered the sermon in the morning, and Rev. Fulk, a son of the venerable Martin Fulk, in the afternoon. Both efforts an racted the close attention of the audience and were productive of much good.

A feature of Sunday was the ex-

Since the Canadian have had to hift for themselves in military affair, they have created a strong ami effective sydicm el militia, with i. nucleus of regiments in constant service. The extent and thoroughness of this system, ami the hold it has acquired in all parts of the Dominion , are surprising facts, as detailed by J. Macdonald Oxley in the American Magazine far September. Perhaps we may learn something from the success of our neighbor in organizing their militia so that for all practical purposes it is a umtf almost as available as a standing army.
