rut 9X4T crrir m xokdoxi- I . . There is but one city on earth par "tXceUence, and that is Jjondon. fctcfcngs, old, homely Iiondon boilt up o'i yellow-brown bricks, mfle alter mile; nothing regular; all quadrangular and triangular and re-entrant, irregularities, beggaring description and defying reproduction, elsewhere on earth. Nothing seems laid out beforehand; but, as if the city's growth ever came upon its builders frith a wild surprise, so that thay truck out vaguely andriradefiniiely anywhere to get . out of its way, yet always running in irregular panic, scattering N E. S. Wr in lanes and alleys and crescents, courts, etc., just as the fathers fled apace in the olden time from the rapid growth of their days, doing the best they could only to get out of its mighty way as it marched on fulfilling its grand destiny. The only way to go about in it is grapple the problem in "main strength and awkwardness. " and go on getting yourself lost-and" finding yourself again, .until by repeated experiences you get ahead of it- A street that starts as Cornhill, runs a little way and becomes Cheapside, then in a little time is metamorphosed into Imdgate hill, only needs 100 yards further to become Fleet street, and winds up as the Strand, without any conceivable reason, is not a reassuring feature to a stranger anxious to get anywhere. Xo directions on lamp posts to aid the bewildered sojourner, as in our cities. The name is put up at the beginning of a street, on the corner house, and happy are yon i eVeif you SOO it again. As a general thing, the street changes its name so soon that there would not be much use in repeating it. Magnificent blocks of superb businesshouaes, as in Chicago since the fire, you look for in London in vain. Miles upon miles of stately residences in brown stone, as in New York, you nowhere see. Isolated magnificence, dotted here and there, you can fee, But beyond this the everlasting rows of brownish yellow bricks, with no pretentions to anything like elegance oatside, and'not even the spotless red and white of the Quaker primness of the City of Brotherly Love. Yellow-brown and brownyellow bricks and chimney pots by the sere, the mile, the million, till one wonders if the whole island be not built over in this dingily-solid way. Evangelist Barnes. A CVAPTEM OX ELIES. Yon can sometimes catch a base-bail on a fly. The most irritating fly is the Spanish fly. The Latin name for a certain kind of fly is tempus fugit. Flies are always on hand early in the morning. You have all seen a kite fly. Some flies are always in jail. Longfellow speaks of a fly as a bird, when he says: "Ply proud bird of freedom. You can draw a fly with a drop of molasses better than with a crayon. We have often seen flies handcuffed. Flies moke a point where business is concerned. i At the boarding-house table did you ever see the first new butter-fly of the season? ' Some people employ the blind to keep flies from the room. Tho spider is the only creature which invites the fly to his parlor. The only popular fly "Shoofly." If lies are like rivers. They are often dammed. A conjugal quarrel is a promoter of hair-flies. Stage flies are painted, time flies wholly unadorned by art. A fly is conservative in his reading he always sticks to his own paper. Butchers and grocers exhibit flies on their windows. Yon can't drown a fly in the milk of human kindness. When you "darn a fly" you do not need a needle and worsted. . A sure sign of fly-time :...: Although flies don't stay long in one place, they always carry a trunk. There are musical flies. People often apeak of that base fly. When you see a kite fly, it is no cruel to stick a pin in it. This a very "fly article Chicago Telegram. TO DISTINGUISU SEX OJP FOWLS. An experienced' poultry-raiser gives the following rules, which he says a close observer can soon learn to apply without mistake: The drake wheezes, the duck quacks. The Guinea cock and hen both have a peculiar, disagreeable ehatts -t, but the hen sometimes says "buckwheat" or "go back," which the cock never does. The peacock can be distinguished, even when only a few mouths - old, by the foxy red pinion feathers of his wings. In the case of turkeys, the breastbone of the cock is turned out at the front joint, while that of the hen is straight. The Chinese gander gives one loud, clear screech, but that of the goose seems to be broken, making two different, sounds, as if the first were made by forcing her breath out and the other by drawing" it back. Inter Ocean. aPOVQJBS. It seems a very funny mistake for anybody to make to call a live animal a plant, or to think a vegetable is alive. But some plants are so much like animals that even such great scientists as Tyndall and Huxley have had disputes V-thejn as to whether they belong to the animal or' vegetable kingdom. Sponges ore very near the dividing line between animal and vegetable life. Year3 since they were thought to be sea plants, but now they are considered to be animals devoid of locomotion nnd having, of course, a very low grade of life, and less intelligence, even, than an oyster. When first pulled from the rock where it grows, the sponge looks like a wrinkled mass of putty. It is drab dolor, exceedingly heavy, has a sickening odor, and i3 filled with a striny mucus which drops from it in long, sticky lines. The external pores are partly closed by a sort of sea-bug which must be an annoying interloper to the sponge-builder; while often a red seaWOrm an inch or two in length is found far within the fibres. What is the exact office of the mucus fluid does not appear to be clearly settled. But it is certain that when taken from the sponge and placed on still bottoms, new sponges are produced from it; and if two pieces of the same living sponge, or of two different sponges of the same species are laid side by side on the se.i bottom, they soon grow together. Sponges are found in warn; M-aters in various parts of the world, tho best coming from the Mediterranean- sea, where divers bring them upj and some of the finest grades have sold as high c.6 $50 or $100 a pound for surgical and other purposes. Off the Bahama Islands there is also a productive sponge bottom. The sponge bottoms most sought are in the coral beds, fifty miles east of Nassau. Lying on his chest along the boat's deck, the fisher, with his water-glass a pane of glass set in a box fitted with handles looks down forty feet into the clear depths. When he discovers a sponge he sinks a slender pole, sometimes fifty feet in length, fitted at the end with a double hook. The hook is inserted at the rocky base, and by a sudden jerk the sponge is detached to be brought up on deck. The eye of the fisher has to be trained by long experience to peer into the sea and tell the valuable sponges from those that are worthless. The strain on the eye and body is most intense; the cramped position and exposure to wind and wet make almost every sponge-fisher a victim of acute rheumatism, yet he rarely earns more than $15 per month.
To prepare the sponges for export they are placed on deck under the tropical sun, or hung in large festoons from the little vessel's mast, so that the heat may kill all the living organisms within the fiber. Then the sponges are dunvped into a sort of cage made by driving a circle of small piles a few inches apart from each other in the sand. Through these piles the tide plays violently, washing away from the sponge the sand, the dead animalcule;, and other impurities with which the mass is clogged. Christian at Work.
The Little Model Bepubllc - Valparaiso, ChtxiI. Senor Bicardo Staven, a leading commission merchant of this city, affcfer having exhausted all other remedies, has heen completely cured of rheumatism by tho use of 8t. Jacobs Oil, the great pain-banisher; Ha- mantes ibis,

" "Did he leave you anything?" "No, and the fact of the business is, that's what breaks me up. If he had only left me something as a keepsake I could bear the grief much more philosoxihically." Arkansaw Traveler. XUE BARYTONE. The way to spell baritone nowdays is barytone, that is, if you're writing about one of the Eyetalian opera fellows. The barytone is invariably the disappointed lover. He has. crescendo legs and wears soulful lavender tights. He has a drooping moustache and some sidewhiskers, and the critics always mention him after they have got through with everybody else and want to fill out another paragraph before tackling the "orchestration" and "the bill for this evening." The barytone is, in short, all that that spelling of his musical kind would imply. Chicago News. TICE BLACK HOLE. An. interesting discovery has just been made in Calcutta by Mr. Bayne, an engineer in the employment of the East India Railway company. He has succeeded in identifying the exact site of the historical Black Hole, and has laid bare a portion of its walls. They are in a perfect state of preservation, with the plaster intact on the inner surface. The dimensions of the chamber correspond exactly wifeh those recorded. The excavation has been made just inside the gate in Dalliousie square, on tho north side of the general postoffice which occupies a portion of what was the northeastern bastion of the old fort. It has been suggested that a monument to the victims should be erected on the Bite. It was in the dungeon known as tlie Black Hole, only eighteen feet square, that one day in June, 1756, 146 British prisoners were crowded, and
only twenty-three of them came forth alive the next morning. St. James' Qasette. SO0B Roman Catholic dignitaries in the United States bear the title of Monsignor, namely: Consignors Doane, of Newark, N. J. J Preston and Quinn, of New York, and Benoit, of Fort Wayne, Ind.
