MePheeters, Secretary. The year 1883 must have been bom under a bad star.' It has witnessed such a series of disasters as stand recorded in no other year of our recollection. Beginning with that lurid holocaust of the Newhall House, at Milwaukee, it has gone on from accident to accident, of marked extent and fatality, wrecking property and sacrificing human life, untill the recent earth

The north bound passenger train Monday morning was delayed two hours by a wreck at Providence. The Fortville Journal, a seven column folio, has been received aw exchange. The Telephone wishes it success.

John McGee and -wife visited Mrs. Anna Buchanan, at Jeffersonville last week.

Charles Coffin and family, of indianapolis, spent Sunday last in Bloomington, a guest of Mr. Coffin' s mother.

D. O. Spencer was pardoned by Governor Porter the 20th. His time would have been out the 29th. to-day. f The "Colored World," the paper that was started at Indianapolis several months ago in the interest of the Coloi-ed people and in opposition to the Leader, yielded up the ghost last week.

Edward Sewaid "was at home, the first two davs of the week. He has charge of a plow exhibit at the Southern Exposition and always see that the Bloomington people see all that is to see so far as it is possible with him.

quake at Ischia, swallowing up eight thousand people, crowns the

awful list aud one-third of the year yet remains. On land and sea, in Europe and j meriea, a terrible Providence or a ruthless Fate has pursued men, and to it they have succumbed, in fire or flood, by cholera, or etn-tb quake, or cyclone until the aggregate is sickening to consider, to appalling to recount. Water never seemed more murder

ous than now, since the Flood of Noah's time; fire was never in more

hot haste to consume the works and wealth of men than during this ! 1 year; disease has fastened with j

new power upon the land where civilization begaw, und claimed for death its victims by thousands; and even the earth must open an swallow men down, with the awful swiftness of an aveneins: demon. The Railwav has done its full share of the work of destroying human life and our State has furnished its full share, of victims.

A dispatch from Craig Hunter, down in Mexico, states that he has just recovered from a severe, attack of yellow fever. He was dowu in that section of the country engineering for a rail road aud came in contact with the disease. The Ohio election is one week from, next Tuesday, when a Govner and the Legislature will be chosen. There seems to be no doubt whatever but that the Republic-alls will carry the State, as the Democrats are in a serious quarrel among themselves. Anyhow the State of Ohio is a Republican Statewhen ever it is needed to start the Presidential ball to roiling.

The Indianapolis Sentinel Company has been awarded the stationery printing of Monroe county for the coming year, the company promising to do the work for much less than the Commissioners have oaid heretofore. It is honed our

Commissioners will not cheek their

reform, but will apply the prumug-

fork to local matters in the same hne. A penny saved is a penny made for the tax-payers. George Hunter was in town on Sunday, and returned to Indianapolis Sunday night. He is making arrangements to erect shops to make spark-arrestors, that he has recently patented. A company has been formed, of which Morton C. Hunter, Dr. Van Nnys and George Hunter own the controling interest. Mr. Hunter has already succeeded in getting two leading roads to adopt his inrention and others have it tinder consideration.

Elia Able has been looking up the old people of Monroe county with a purpose of preparing some kind of a statement that will be of interest

to old and vounu as well. Ihc

Telephone has been permitted to share some of his knowledge from

which it is learned that fifteen

couples reside within eight miles of Ellettsville that have lived together more than fifty years, as follows:

John Stanger, Chris. Shawror, Lewis

Waldron, Jas. II. Parks, Jesse Runnelds, Andrew Reeves, Peter Whitsell, Jacob W hhIs, Thomas Karrington, Lindsey Williams, John Ellett, Valentine Cline, Win. Brown; John Fyffe and James Lee. In Bloomington there are five couples who have been married fifty years ami over: Zemsi Worley, Samuel Hendrix, Jas. Milieu, Thomas B. Gailow-

,av and Samuel Orchard. Undo ;

Able is certainly correct when he thinks Monroe county is the healthiest spot on the continent, any how in Indiana. I low soon we arc forgot ten.

Wednesday was the second anniv- j

ersary or Garhold s death, and not a morning paper in Iudianapolis alluded to it. The News mentioned the fact in the afternoon; next day one of the morning dailies contained a like mention. Ten years from now very few people will be able to give anything like a current account of the tragedy of his taking off. Though the apple crop is reported a failure, it is believed that the crop of statesmen who are willing and anxious to serve their country for pay is up to the average. Smoke the "Charm eigar.

Mrs. James Karsell returned Friday from a visit among her friends in Green county, Ohio, after several wcekn absence. Homer Fulk is now at the Western Union office at Lafayette, pre

ferring that to a position as operator for the L. N A. fc C. road. II. Q. Houghton, who has been dangerously sick at his home in Logoottee with thypoid fever, is much better and thought to be out of danger. The Reporter, ot Euglish,Iudiana, comes to our table mueu improved.

Its increase? in size and also its better appearance gives evidence of deserved success. Last Saturday afternoon three

citizens of Monroe, county met in the court house yard aud shook hands, their age aggregated being 252 years; John Stronger, Si years old; James Nuckles, S:, and Francis McKinley, 85. In Prof. Cole's book store is being exhibited a very creditable piece of sculpturing by Harmon Fodder, representing a lamb at. .rust. It is made to place at the foot of his wife's grave, in the city cemetery. Bloomington ought to have a good brass band. No place in the Stale as large as this, is without one, and now that a campaign is in the near future, let a Blind be organized in Bloomington, P S. Practice in some other part of town. John Graham will occupy the corner room, of the new block, over Charley Tourner's clothing store. L. D. Rogers and Wra. M.
