Tur: Rev. John Ja- per, the negro i re-u Ir r made famous by his sermon t i-guinjr that the sun and not the t aril moves, is .dying at Richmond. Jif- has had the largest congregation of any preacher in the South, and one of the largest in the United States. It has numbered about 4,000. He has repeated bissermon on the rotation of the sun a hundred times. He is modest and quiet, and has great influence with. the members of his congregation. . m mm Mr. Platt's, off r to withdraw from the struggle jor the re-election is another mark in the decline and fall of Conkling's "vindication." He offers to jettison Piatt as mariners jettison the cargo of a sinking ship. And this is to put him in shape to trade for his election coupled with a "halfbreed,' Thus is collapsed the windbag of hi? personal power and dignity. Thsis his vindication dwirdlcd to an attempt to crawl ba.k by intrigue and bargain to the scat which he so grandly resigned. The chief owner of the German paper at St Louis, with which Carl Scburz is connected, in retiring from that paper expresses the opinion that "German newspapers have seen their tipt days in this country. This is a Fusible recognition of the inevitable progress of the American people to erne language, and that one the English, Emigration may keep up a limited succession of German speaking ;ifi zens, but to their descendants, even "of the first generation, and to those
brought here while young, the culture of German will be exotic. : . . m mm Judge Robertson broke the New York machine last 3ear, shivered it into atoms, and this is the reason of ; Sir. Conkling's hate of him. Boss of Judge Robertson, made him ruler over several little creatures in the Assembly. But the condition of the acceptance of the position would have been slavish subserviency to the orders of the Lig Bosses. Judge Robertson preferred-to be a maehi tiebreaker rather than a little Boss. And it is through this circumstance that the New York machine methods have been disclosed. We are indebted to Judjre Robertson's firmness for the exposure of the rottenness of New York State politics. The hide ousness, the tyranny, and the meanness of Bpsslsm have been laid bare. The big Bosses "own" a lot of little Bosses whom they put in places where they derive a support from the public purie; and these little Bosses steal tne time due the Government and devote it to deceiving and cheating the people on whose bounty they subsist! If there is a mea er vice that Bossism we have not heard of it. If there is a vocation more degrading than machine liiK it has not come under our obvascrtlon. The aim of machine politic s is lo divide the community into two classes, tyrants and lickspittles. Thetyianis drag the honor of the Government in the mire and rob it of the services of its paid servants, and the licksph ties prey upon it, disgrace it, and steal its small change. Now in those days there arose one Conkling, whose previous name was Roscoe, und he was from that country which is called the Empire State, and he said unto the rulers and unto the lawgivers, ami unto the people: "Go to. Who is this man whom you have set up to be a ruler among men, and who was at one time an hireling, and clubbed mules along the towpathV" And he was very wroth, and spat upon the ground with a loud plunk, insomuch that the plunkness thereof waxed great and he said: Verily, I will make this man, whose middle congo men is Abraham, to bite the dust, and I will mak e the weight even, of his overshoes for to break his neck. And this was in the second month of the reign of Garfield, who afore-ttinedidwhace mules on the tow-path, and fling chimes even of bass-wood and profanity ferninst tbtm. But when Conklinc whose
trout name was Roseoe, did advertise!
to bust the crust of the choif ruler, and to send him back into Meiitar which is over against Ohio, which is the hot-bed of Presidents. He did bite of more than h e could chow, and te rulers and law-givers jerked at him, and told him to go and soak his head, and he cried with a loud voice, and did gay in the temple that he would have no more of it, and he handed in his resignation. And so even did one Piatt, who belonged even unto Conkling, whose anteiior name was Roseoc, And he wos not what he did, for the peopk aroe ar one man ond they put the kibosh on Abou Ben Conkling, and told him he might take a vacation and a furlough of niuctynine years, with permission to cross the sea. And it was so. The slleged indignation in South j Carolina over the aquittal of Col. Cash, the duelist, has subsided with a promptitude that suggests a readiness among the people to be consoled. The truth is that public opinion in South Carolina has not been educated up to the point of reprobating the practice of dueling. Some newspapers oppose it. Men of ssnse wlm have read and traveled are ashamed of it. But the masses of the people still believe in it. A great part of the clamor following the Cash murder of Shannon was due to the fact, first, that there was not a fair provocation to a duel, and, seeondlv, that the vic tim was a lawyer. The lawyers nat-1 uraliV object to being called to account for words spoken in court by any outside and self-ordained tribunal The methods of a court they understand, and kun"- how to split a hair between calumny and truth. But it is to be found that if the rules of the code should everywhere be strictly enforced with reference to words spoken court; the vocation ol some of them would be gone.
