A REPUBLICAN PAPER Jnfciih! every SjaluTilay Haarnsa;?. Oc9 YfTrM " Office: Ov er "Bee Hive"Slore SATURDAY, MAY 14, 3881. ADDITIONAL LOCALS. Let us have a County fair. Fishing parties are popularizing, The new city tiieers have, been -inieiated," The Owen Comity Journal comes to us this week ehnck full of home news,haTing east asunder its patent. Mrs. Ju)ia Osburn, after a pleasant visit for several week will return to her home at Decater, Ills., to-day. According to a new law,, the County Treasurer must see that all delinquent tax is collected, or have the amount deducted from his salary. The last oi this month Charlie Houston and Henry Dodds will start for South-west Texas, where they -will go into the sheep-raising business , The stoek holders and others in terested in holding a County Fair are requested to meet at the Mayors ollke next Thursday, to consider ana discues the matter. By all means let us have a County Fair. Morton Nichols, an enterprising 14 year old boy, a son ot Jack JNicti ols, of this city, has lately invented a steu-ladder and ironing-board com bined. Which promises to make quite a fortune for the young man, if he at tends to the patent part. Some of Vennor's probabilities for May are, that after the 10th the weather will be hot and sultry; thunder storms probably on the 13 and 15th. Between the 20th and 25th there will be cloudv weather, and rain, and vegetation will be considera my advanced. . . " Thursday the contract for building the turn pike, of which mention has been made in this paper, was let to James Small of ill's city, for $2,049 per mile. Rev. Bower, John Mack and Oscar Sou tiers were the other bidders. Wc rk i to begin immediately aud le finished by the Jirsfc of DeeemberScuior Keeeption, Thursday evening Dr. Moss gave the annual reception, at his home, to the Senior class of the University, The reception was a grand affair, and the supier was prepared in that elegant style for which Mrs. Dr. Moss is noted: .. It consisted of all the latest viands in the market, arranged with xou! sit taste. The table was beautifully decorated and presented a tempting spectacle to the honored jruei-K In the center of the table was a large cake with "To the Senior Class of '81" frosted on top. It would be impossible to give any thing like a just description of the supper, but all present will testify as to ils merits. Man v of th e Al u mm in Bl oom in gton wore iuvited, and they together with t he Class iade quite a lively crowd. The acth n of the other classes in making i o demonstrations is highly comment a 'e. Sigma Olii The party given by Mrs. Duncan to the Sigma Chis. on last Wednesday evening, was a verry pleasant gatfceridg, composed of about twenty-six couples. Mrs. Duncan did her duties as hostess in a natural, graceful "m inner, which at once dispelled that formality that so often mars the enjoyment on such occasions. A superb su pper, encIiartiDg moonlight, skillfully executed music and kind host and hostess, ad crutributed to make the evening a most enjoyable one 10 all participating. Among the resident members of Sigma Chi fraternity present, were J. G. MePheeters, Carter Perring, Senator Treat and Repre3enati ve. Bnskirk. Orange JUCIohwoiun. Henry, and Edward O, Chambers and Mairy K. Kelly. , EEP0STI3 BY A. QUIZ. 3 Seniors are non est for a time. Sophomore exhibition May 26th. PhOo exhibition Thursday night. Preparatory exhibition May 24th. Whittaker and Batman came up to attend the S iff social. The pat week has been crowded with thrilling events. The Freshman nine are the cham pion base ball players of the University. We noticed the class album of '81 in Allison's art galiary. It is very handsome, Invitations are oat for a Phi Delta Theta banquet on Monday evening June 6th, The students are wondering if the ellipse in the campus will be sodded by commencement. Hon. James Baker, of Indianapolis has accepted an invitation and will deliver the alumni address. He is a Signi Chi. The Sigma Chi social Wednesday evening was a very enjoyable affair. It was their first attempt a step in the paths of other fraternities. Quite a number of the Seniors went home yesterday, to spend their vacation. Banta couldn't leave(j') and will stay over till Monday. Scott took his a-Long with him. The Connersville New3 and Times compliments Scott by publishing his contest oration. Mr. Scott giaduates this year, and will return to his home and parctice law, for which he is eminently fitted, and doubtless in a few years he will be at the head of his profession. Senior serenades have become a nuisance, and should be abolishedTrue it is good fun for the Seniors to fool the (f er classes for a week or two by keeping them up all night, and then run all oyer town and blow themselves away, but the music grows very monotonous about 4 in the morning. . I t is stated that the Seniors intended going to Gosport Thursday morning to a picnic and boating, but the President objected so seriously that they substituted a serenade, being up all Wednesday night, and were in a very sleepy condition to attend the party the next evening. Last Saturday w s the time for the annual Jul ior display. And it was celebrated with the usual pomp and parade, with the exception that 5c straw- hatb were worn instead of silk. We suppose there was good reasons for this. All was well until the Juniors started to enter the college, when the Sophomores laid hands on them, and, on the principle "when Greek meet Greek," the Juniors were wallowing all over the campus. We glory in the spunk of the Sophs. There is still hope for the "University. The Juniors were too much excited to do section work that morning, and when their Professor locked them in their room, they made their escape through the window, leaving said Prof, to entertain the girls who thought it might not be "expedient" for many reasons, to affect an escape in the same manner. An imsuspected Soph captured a hat, and when it was next seen the Sophs had it burning on a jxle in the Court yard. "The Seniors are going to have steel engraved programmes. This is a step in the right direction. They will be prin ted at Philadelphia." Our University Reporter. This is commendable, in fact the Telephone has often wondered why it was that the college programmes were printed in Bloomingtou when Philadelphia, including the whole State of Pennsylvania, has, and is do n such grand work for the Indiana University. And the Philadelphia papers have ever been its stanch supporters, and publish gratis announcements, and are continually puffing" the institution. Yes, "this is a step in the right direction," for we agree with the President and class that it has been a grand mistake in letting this work where there is very small pay be done in Bloomingtou. We will also look for the report of th Commencement and the usual e id-head announcements in the Philadelphia papers, hereafter, as heretofore. ooRniMis announces with supreme dignity thai Kohcrlson should be coMii-med.
