? WHY ? One week ago last Monday morning the south bound passenger train carried away from our midst one not only noted for hig writings and jouraaliitic efforts of three mouths standing, but mourned for the debts he left unpaid. When this young Knight boarded the train, which was soon to speed him to an unknown destiny to ub his last murmur was 'Til be back next Thursdays boys.'' And thus departed John A, Highet on a pretended visit to Madison, leaving behind him a good name but no riches. " Time flew by and days past ' 'as 'ere days pajBjbbefore",busiuess stopped not, tor did the people miss the departure 1' thi$ gifted son. Thursday Friday came, and th visiting Qaili driver did not return. But nothing strange was thought, as it was supposed his ready money had not yet evaporated, and likely he was playing the Henri Watterson or Whitelaw Reid, with feet cocked up and legs crossed over the chair of a palace hotel, wher e he was wont to rest his mind, sirangly thinking of old Bloomington as lie sutleredhis hosts to "entertain angels unawares." With Sunday came his brother. from Ellettsville looking ifter "Johnnies" welfare, and before he returned left word that tha Editor's return need not be expected. This settled the fact that "Johnny had skipped the town," and like bees his creditors began to swarm about the "availables" left behind his office. Our investigation has developed the fact that monetary matters were not at the bottom of the trouble. Frst of all his office notes wre hot due, ad even if they were the holders were not in a hurry; and the fact that the advertising season had just opened is another evidence of his push, or he would haT?e waited and reaped its profits. So wo take tho reasons that are assigned by good authority, that then must be A WOMAK m THE CASE, Who has caused the trouble, for it is alleged that a young lady up near his old home was about o push him for claims he did not wish to recognize. However this may be, his creditors are in the dark, and intend making the best out of it they can. J W. Showniaker and R. A. Fulk are security for the press, $60; Mathews and Moore, at Ellettsville $150. W. J. Allen, rent $8; National Hotel, $31, and other small bebts. The fact that Mr. Highet obtaided $50 as a mortgage on a press from Mr. Moore one month before he owned the preas is securing money under false pretenses, and will cause the young man trouble if he should ever return. The "Hawkey was established ten weeks ago, and from all out side anpearauces, was doing a thriving businsss. Many who paid their subscript tioa in advance may now ponder over the consequences. During the campaign Samuel J, Kirkwood, who has been honored with a Cabinet position, made two speeches here, remaining several days a guest of Prof. Kirk wood, who is his cousin. Senator Kirkwood is a very abl6 man, a ftlaio. homlev cood natured, farmer

lookinuigold gentleman, with a large'

CITY POLITICS. Joe Henlty ia undecided . -Doddsisfor "Mayoralty and a third term." Miseuer would nut refuse being Mayor himself. George Reeves demands it ''by right of conquest," Who would not support John Waldron as the "official head." Tiester has not refiaed to serve as Councilman from the 2nd Ward Wm. Allen wovld make a good Councilmans from the first Ward. Many of Nat Hill's numerous friends are urging upon him the Mayorality. "Your Honor, Mr. Hill," wouldn't sound bad. Robert Greeves is out for the nomination of C'vty Treasurer. Bob, is ne of our best .citizens and the office could mot ikll in better hands. How would the Democrats like to have the following knocked down: Mayor, Robert Miers; Treasurer, Wyat Wicks; Clerk, Hanry Feltus; Marshal, Charley Cookeiily, The young Republicans certainly deserve recognition in the Spring nominations. How is this slate: Mayor Fat. U. Hill. Treasurer Ben. Rogers. Clerk George Henley. Marshal G. A. Buskirk.
