Jfssj Smith, a well known and prominent farmer living near South Union, met with a terrible accident .yesterday morning that proved fatal. Mr, Smith is the owner of-a threshing maehinfc and has a trActioft engine that furnishes the bower and pulls the machine about the country. He was engaged in .throning wheat near Macksville, Greene county and with returning home John Ponelfts vas fchgiheer of the engine arid While climbing a large hill known A3 Wolfs Creek hill, which is very steep, in some manner they losV control Of the engine, and it began running backwards at terrific speed: Smith who Was on the engine, fell bfr and thb ponderous' Wheel pasted up his Fight log mashing and mingling that mem In r; up the right side and shoulder cutting his right ear off. The poor fellow's suffering were intense and awful t3 behtold. Thtt employes, who were on the machine, rushed to his iassistance. Medical aid was summoned but nothing,accdrding to the ph.yseians, could stay Ui8 faint spark of life, that remained when they arrived. The poor fellow was able to request that his wife and brother be sent ibr which was done. Mr. Smith was a Mas n in good standing being . a raembeir of the Stanford Lodge. He was about 51 Tears of age and leaves a widow and children. His brother, Henry, who lives in this city, and is employed at Waldron, llill & Bittttifk'e spSkc factory, left for the scene of the accident as soon as notified. To Soo Mr . Cooper Columbus Herald. Some time ago it .was : rurar that the state examination questions used when teachers- are examined for license had been sold in advance in several counties, The Indianapolis News says: 'Superintendent of Public Instru:tion Geeling..has received information that ' some oiie has been selling teachers' license questions again. Recently the questions have been -oflerexi- lor sate irr several counties southeast of Indianapolis. It is said at the department that the questions must have come from some County Superintendent, but as yet the department has not been, able to Ideate the guilty person. As' a precaution against the questions being offered for sale the depart ment has arranged thit hereafter the questions shall be sent out in a linen lined envelope. The I envelope will be pealed and the Heal of the State upon it, and must b opened by the County Superintendent on ' the morning ot tne examination in tne pres ence of at least three teachers of the county. These witnesses will certify to tho department that the envelope tfas opened in their presence. Excursion to Chicago. . Tho Monon Route will run an excursion Id Chicago on Saturday, Aug. 10th.
