The "kids" shoud brace up,clean

Sunday,as it will be the only chance this! year to get m their work oa the Chiistmas tree.

had been living for fory-eight years, Mary the wife of Wm.

Alba Heywood, the noted imper-
sonator, and people's favorite char
acter actor, company, will appear
at the Opera House, Wednesday
evening, Jan. 1. Mr. Heywood re
turns with a much larger company
than last season, presenting a nov

solo band and orchestra ; they are
immeLse. Secure your seats in ad
vance at the usual place. Hear the orchestra in their last selection, "A trip to Coney Island." -
It is understood that a detective
has been through the counties in this part of the state lately engag
ed in reporting owners of dams who
have failed to put in fish ladders; BAmes of township trustees who
have failed to enforce the law, the
owness of seines and other facts on
which to base prosecution. The
fish commissioner has started out
to enforce the law and the numerous arrests and convictions he has
made in the northern part of the
state would indicate that he means business.
J&ice Holtzman, who is now at
Kokomo, Ind., writes as follows to the Cockier. I have just noticed a paragraph in the Progress stating a vacancy in the plate glass works at wages, $2.25 per day, open to any. Please state such not to be the case, as there are here in town many more applicants than places to be filled. Two of Mr. Noel's hands have secured places through his influence. Please correct the statement of the Progress so none there need be mislead. There will be a fox drive in Washington township, on the 25th of December. The officers the same as those of the Thanksgiving drive. Boundary to ru n as follows : Starting at Simpson's Chapel and run west to Joe Williams', thence aonth to Johnson's ford, thence east to Frank W hisnand's ford thence north to starting point. Will center on Wm. Wood's farm. Everybody invited. Form lines at 9 o'clock, and march at 10 o'clock. No guns or dogs allowed, and if any foxes are caught they will be sold to pay expenses. M. A. Houston. Chiel commander. Wheuthe new postal cards come out persons will have to tell which kind-they want when they wish to purchase one There will be three sizes when the contracts are finally taken up: One fine delicate card for ladies? use, much smaller than now in circulation and of a much finer quality. Finely calendered paper will be substituted for the old buff blotting paper. An inter medi i e card of the same size as the one now in use will be introduced that c in be used for business purp se, and will be large enough to allow a bill head to be printed there m, besides other matter.
The V osident demands in his
message free tobacco and alcon
hoi, but not free blankets and iree salt. The Democratic majority in Mississippi is 81,030. There were six Republican votes in the whole State. m pi An arrearage pensiou bill has been introduced in Congress, this session, by Senator Yoorhees, and a Service Pension bill by Senator Turpie- both Democrats . ma mm Work has been stopped on the State Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument for the winter season. During the summer the monument has been adyanced fortyfive feet.
Republican editors have a grievance against Jefferson Davis because he did not die at, the right time; to please them he
should hav died in the middle of
a bloody shirt campaign. No; all intelligence is not in the Republican party. One reading clerk in the House of Represenatives has already been dismissed because he had to spell his words as he went along. By Harrison's message 50,-
000,000 more taxes are collected than is needed to run the gov
ernment. Why not stop this enormous tax by relieving the necesaries of life from such burdens?
The laboring man should have a just appreciation of his position in life. As a producer be is a creator. He is the foundation stone of the world. Every human law that is framed, is based on estimates made from the products of his labor.
Col. Matson's object in visiting the national capital is to persuade his former colleagues in congress to vote for Chicago as the place of holding the world's fair. He takes with him the best wishes ot this comunitv for his success. Greencastle Banner.
In round numbers 900,000 of
the new Indiana series of school books have been distributed through the State. This would average almost two books for each pupil enrolled during the last year, and almost three books for each pupil in attendance.
The Republican managers of
Indiana are unscrupulous and of the Dudley stripe. They will do any foul thing to win this next election. Of course, many are cursing Harrison because thej did not get office. But Democrats can not bank on their present dissatisfaction. They will get over it. mm f m Don't permit any one to pursuade you to invest in any scheme that is, upon its verj- face, a swindle. It has been demonstrated fully that you can not get something for nothing. Then when you are approached by a stranger who wants you to invest
in a ''sure thiii" steer clear of
it. mm m The practice of carrying concealed weapons is much more common in the cities of the North than in the South. It is
one of the most pernicious of
habits, utterly without excuse, and is responsible tor a majority of the causeless homicides. It ought to be made a felony in every State of the Unioii. At a caucus ol Repulicau members ot the Senate and House held on Saturday, proposition was carried by a large majority to the effect that "It is the duty of the Republicans to ackno w
ledge the iorce ot the election of
Governor Boies, and so arrange
the inevitable legislation that it
shall be divested of all partisan
character.' The Iowa Republi
cans appear to think that it was
Prohibition that did the worb.
