A large number of the leading white Republicans of Alabama met at Birmingham Tuesday, with the avpwed purpose of making their party a white man's party, and perfected an organization which they call the White Republican Protective Tariff League, the distinctive ' provision of which is that no negro shall be eligible to membership, While the convention was ia session other meetings were held by the negroes at which the originators of the League were denounced as traitors.

An entrance to the building was effected through the cellar door on the sidewalk, and the rascals then passed through the cellar and up the back stairs into the meat shop. They then went through the desk and helped themselves to a lot of canceled checks, memorandum book, and other papers. These papers were found the next morning lying by

the railroad. The burglars attempted to get: into Souder's saloon next door, but were unsuccessful. It is generally thought that the thieves were following the circus, but more likely it was "home talent," as ex
