DEMOCRATIC TO TItfi COKE.

Who is street Commissioner? Bow many have we? Who draw the pay. It costs something to be a thriving city, but we want to see what it does cosh Wk suggest the editor ot the Telephone as a Reform (!)caDdidate for Councilman from the Second Ward. Times are; dull Items are scarce. We suggest another block of five" wedding in the Telephone office. Oca old city officers are all honest men, but honest men sometimes get cireless- especij ally when they are running other people's affairs. . The Telephone suggest the edr itor of the Courier as a candidate for Mayor. The editor oi the Telephone, George Washington Bradfute, will never-get even as for as Mayor, no matter how many cherry trees be cuts. A tjcket nominated by a Cenvant ion that spends its time in flipping up nickels tor the nominations, and fining the successful candidates a bushel' of apples, should be beaten. It is time for more serious business. Sous Republican newspaper or official Las declared nearly every important law passed the last legislature unconstitutional. They content themselves however, with simply abasing the juew election law. Why? Is not a law prohibiting the buying or selling votes as fair for one side as the ether?

The school-book mono

from o. Van Antwerp Bragg & Co have been sending out circulajrs to dealers, advising them to lay in a stock ol the 51d highpriced books, giving an opinion that the new law will be a failrare. It may be that this firm knows what it is talking about, as the Republican officials have done-nothing toward enforcing the new law. Tus is a mighty good year for an opposition city ticket There is no partisan excitement, and men of all parties will look at their own interests regarding home affairs. We have heard very many citizens, Republican in politics, express themselves as being tired of what they term machine rale; They would like tu have a new deal all around.

The city is in debt away out of

sight; money is being-spent right and left, nobody knows what for. It may be all right, but the taxpayers want to know it. They want to see the books.

- Hon. S. SI Gox. of New York, . . .lectured in the College Chapel, last ' Tuesday night, on "The Poetry of . Mechanism." His lecture was ably prepared and .interspersed with wit- - ty thoughts. If read from the , manuscript by a less greater man it -.. would not have been received with as -much attention, and ap

and if he had figured out how much pay lie -was receiving per minute for delivering that lecture the resuit would have been a fraction over $2,22. HUTCHINSON & COS BIG SHOW Is coming to this citv. and the Wild West exhibition is coming with him. The colosal menagerie and the startling vealistic representation of wild life in the West will be herein combination. Never before has this show attained such dimensions as have now been reached. Nearly every kind of attraction that the world can offer is shown under the acres of canvass, from the famous fighting, dancing and clown elephants to the portrayai, by the Wild West show, of Custer's Last Charge, the robbery of the overland mail, and the presentation of other interesting scenes. There are whole tribes of genuine Indians, and no end of scouts, cowboys and Mexican vaqueros. Among the marvels of equestrianism which may be seen in the great rings of the circus is the driving of a contrivance on wheels with four horses harnessed to il while several performers execute wonderful acrobatic feats and other acts with the horses flying at lull speed. A four horse chariot race, clowns in comical sulky drives, gymnasts, leapers, riders, a menagerie and o museum of curiosities are a few of the many things which attract and please visitor to the great show. A magnificent street parade will ushtr in the festivities of the day. m m ; : Fine Rugs at Adams, Hall & Go, .' Uaiversify Items. The new catalogue will be out soon. Miss Mattie East visited college Tuesday. The campus is putting on her

summer robe.

Misses Faris and Perry and F. B. Foster visited college Monday. John Rudical, of Prep., is the latest addition to the Phi Gams. Arbatus Hill seems to be a favorite resort for etudents at present. Hon. "Sunset Cox was entertained by Prof. Woodford while in the cityProf. Woodford's class in political science is reporting on out side reading, It seems a little doubtful whether or not we will get our appropriation this year. A number of students are at Indianapolis taking in the Booth and Barrett engagement. A. E. Rogers, an ex- Superintendent of Hendricks county, visited classes in college Tuesday. Hon. C. R. Worrall and lady will

tender the "Skull" a reception at

"Birds Nest" next Friday night. Dr. Campbell lectured to the Mathematical club at the residence of Prof . Green last Saturday evening ... , F. M. Gardner, a student of last year who is now taking the Medical course at Ann Arbor, visited college Monday. Dr. Jordan will be away for two weeks. He left Wednesday and will meet with the State Board, visit Chicago and the East before returning. Prof. Coulter, of Wabash college, gave an able and scholarly lecture on "Practical Education," Tuesday evening. Prof. Coulter always has something good to say and the students are glad to welcome him The first game of base ball according to the lately arranged sched ule was played Thursday afternoon between the nines of Bloss and Boland. The result was 22 to 23 in favor of the former. Higgins acted as umpire. Mr. Wilkerson, of DePauw, took first place in the State Oratorical contest last Friday and Mr. Pence, of Hanover, second. The socaliecl merit system don't seem to avail much since a combination between the Phi Delta Thetas and the Betas captured all the offices of the association.
