Preszds&t Habeison baa informed the Senate- that he will be se far along with his nominations by next week that the assistance of that body may be dispensed with after that. This may be interpreted to mean that the Presidents intends to make a large number of changes in the next few days, or that he will give the present officeholders a lew months of grace. It seems as if a large portion of tht jtest work of the last legislature is -tobe lost. The Republicans are making a hard fight in the courts against the benevolent institutions bill, the police bill' and the board ot public works bill; rhg school book monopolists are trying to pick a flaw in the school book bill, and jo coal mine owners are rejoicing over the tact that the enacting clause has been omitted irera the coal screening bill.

If the interviews printed in the newspapers are true, the new Commissioners of Peasions, Corporal Tanner is going to be HQTy liberal in 'granting pensions. Many soldiers voted the RepubJican.ticketat the last election through the promises made them hy Republican stump-speakers and newspapers: It was promised among other things that the arrearage of pension act Wonld be repealed; We don't believe it will be by the next Congress. AFAia indication of the rush for office may be had by a glance at the records M the Stte Department, Though the Republics n Administration kas, been in power only three weeks yet in that iirna there have been filed in Secretary Blaine's office . over 16,000 applications for positions in the Consular service. Truly, the Republicans are hun- : i Canwdaxs for the halt-dozen fourth-class post-offices in Wabash coianly, Ind have become so numerous that elections are being held to decide on a popu lar, choice. The election for the Jjagro offices occurred Saturday, Lewis F. Murphy being the suc-

A decision was rendered Wednesday in favov of the taxpayers, the Court holding that the Commissioners had no right to make any such additional levy, Lon D, Rogers has been employed ds travel agent for the New York Mutual Life Insurance Co. The fact that he is employed by this great company, at a good salary, shows that he is a live insurance man and that his services are valuable.

The Uniform Rauk K. of P.. presented their Captain, C. R. Worrall with a gold mounted charm last Monday tight. The presentation speech was made, by Sir Knight Carpenter, and an appropriate response was give bp Capt. Worrall. Eollowmg is what the Indianapolis News, a paper that earnestly supported Harrison for the presiduncy, says of the unexampled scrambled for office': 'Even the democrats, fter a quarter of a cen tury of deprivation did not rush with such fierceness ior the spoils that the republicans have shown already after a four years' famine. It shakes ones faith almost In popular institutions to sec with what fury the mob comes pouring in after a few places, to secure which many times the emoluments yielded ace spen t in advance. V hat is it that makes this hunger for a public office? Arr we, after all, under the name of a republic, simply the same worshipers of place and titles who in other countries are calculated on and provided for by Jaw and creates rank and caste?" We don't know ns to that, but it is quite evident that a good many iepu oilcans 'ate very hungry and likewise thirsty.
