But a few days remain for tbt legislature to do some goon work. The election law aad the anmkilatiaa of the school hook trust are the most inportant things to be done.; i The Protection boom" continues to sain force as the time approaches for the induction oi the new administration into office. Last week's failure?, strikes, wage roductions,8uspentfions, ehut-do w ns and trust iormatrons were ahead of the records Ihejcountry can settle down to twenty years of assured s" protections," exclaimed the - organs after election, and it looks as if the country had taken them at their word. During the last years of lie- - publican rule, before the election . of President Cleveland, a " favorite term .applied to their pol itical opponents by the. Republicans was "the hungry and thirsty Democris"- if the only suiting star ot the Democracy in its struggle to regain control of the government was the prospect of filling the offices. But upon t he advent of the Democrats to power it was discovered that there was no unseemly rush for office, and that in many instances President Cleveland could only fill import

Certainly, no such wild rush for the flesh-pots of the government ha ever- been witnessed in the history of the Republic as at : this time- Invspeaking of this state of affairs, the Indianapolis

was presented to Colonel Matson as a token oi their esteem and respect. The gift is an exceedingly fine one, the casing aDund f,he works being made of plated gold, which is exquisitely ornamented with handengraving and inlaid figures. Accompanying the time-piece was an elegant silver cigar-case, capable of holding two hundred cigars. The ckrks and other attaches of the committee had tilled the case with a lot of choice cigars, and when Chairman Matson arose to express his appreciation for the memento his colleagues had presented him. it was amid a cloud of smoke. He was visibly alFected. and it was some time before he could control ills emotion sufficiently to enable him to talk. He expressed his thanks. however,in a proper and appropriate manner. Then speeches were made by others, during the course of which pleasant allusions were made to Mr. Morrill, of Kansas, as the

Laboring men in these industries should receive higher wages as a result of the greater prosperity ot their cm ploy ers, but owing lo the fact that their numbers are to be reduced, and that those discharged will at once become clamorous for work, it will doubtless follow that those kept on will have to accept less pay than heretofore; if not they will be supplanted by their discharged com pan ions, who will take what they can get to keep from starving. Editor Courier: A special friend of the writer was kind enough to send me' a copy of the Courier ol Feb. 2d. which was a very pleasant surprise to me though it has been 40 years since he has been in your city. Seeing a piece in the Courier headed 4Now and Then' reminded me of my boyhood uays when I used to walk the streets of your city, i have a very vivid recollection ot the place and its location and I have an idea i I was carried in your citv in midnight hours 1 would not hesitate in saying I could locate many places though I know there ha3 been many changes made,- It was quite a pleasure for me to see in vour paper the many familiar names that exist ed when 1 was a mere schoo'.-boy: Howe, Rogers, Borland, Maxwell, McOubougn, Owens, Batter ton. It was an exciting Liiuc each party doing all in i.hcir power to defeat the other siie. Just before the election the Democrats lecided to have a grand barbaeuc as the song went Rubin Lucas had fine beef which he was holding in readiness for the special occabio.ii two days before the baibacue came off a storm came up and a tree tll on the cow and 'killed it.
