SKETCH. OF AN OLD CITIZEN.
Enxroie Courier: I see in your good paper of January 19th, that my friend Jossph Berry, formerly of Monroe county', but now living in Minden, La., was appointed by the Governor as Assessor of the Parish- in which he lives. As .Mr. Berry has referred to me in a former commnnication as he being related' to my wife, , I will proceed to give a short sketch of his life ; he is- the son of Judge Joseph Berry, a man well known in he early settling of Monroe country he then lived on Indian creek, where Harmony was located, in 1820, Harmony was built in 1325. Judge Berry was one of the organizers of Harmony, he was a man of influence and an able preacher in the Christian denomination land at one time Judge of our court and also county surveyor. In 1832 he sold his farm to Dudley C. Smith whose widow owns and still lives on it, and obtained from Gen Jacob B. Lowe, then Clerk of the Monroe Circuit Court, a certificate with seal of office attached thereto, to the high standing of the Bearer, together with about $1,500, Joseph the subject of this sketch, was then about fifteen years old, his father .died about the time reach his destination, but Joseph having decended from good ancestors continued to grow and prosper until he reached his present honorable position. In November 28th, 1834.1 was married to Mr Berry's cousin, and neice of
