The trial of Mandeville Baugh for the killing of John W. Morgan in the town of Spencer, O wen county, Ind on the 6th day of August last, came up for trial, in the Gireut Court of this couuty, on a change of venue from Owen county, on Tuesday of this week. The history of the case, On the night of the 6th of August, 1887, eight stone quarry, hands employed John W. Morgan, a livery stable keeper of Spencer, to take them to Romona, a little st ation on the I. & V. road four miles northeast of the former place. They start ed about 9 o'clock, in a three seated

Perry occupying the back seat, got into a difficulty, a nd while holding Petry with one hand, drew his revolver and . handing the same to his brother Mandeville, telling thim to shoot Perry. In turning around toward where Perry was Bitting, the weapon was discharged, accidently or on purpose, the ball taking effect in the light breast of Mr. Morgan, from the eifects of which he died on the 10th day of that month. In this case the State is represented by W.R. Asher, Prosecuting Atty also by Messrs. Grubbs, Parks and Matthews, of this city, and Messrs. Enlarging a speciality at Summqrs galle ry,
It has been hinted broadly over this section of our blessed land where dwell happy Democrats, and whose climate is' too hot for ballotbox stuff ers, that the Hon John R. East, the pink of iVionroe County's Stalwart Democracy, was a candidate
for Congress. Hence, he was cornered by a Coukier minion and made to disgorge, He was tackled thusly. "Mr. East,'1 "In your travels over the state, whom do you think the democrats will likely nominate for Governor? "I could not say, but Col. Mat-
son, uapt. flyers, juctge jxiuiaca and other distinguished democrats have been mentioned, but both Matson and Myers have quite a following." "Whom do 3'ou think will be nominated for President and Vice President by the republicans? "If the convention should- come off to-day, Blaine and Harrison would be nominated, The Democrats, will nominate Mr. Cleveland, and I believe Gov. Gray will be nominated for Vice President. This will secure the electoral vote of Indiana for the democracy. "What do you think of the President's message? , "Well, in the first place, I beleive
it win lorce congress to pass some measure of relief for the people, by taking ofi the taxes on the necessaries of life. It has put the Democrats on their metal, and infused new life into tnc party. It has demoralized the republicans and put most of them out on -'first base". It struck tiiem like a cyclone and presents a square issue by the people on one hand and tbe monopolies on the other. It is a plain, bold and direi t and reads like the sermon on tha mount. It is all we need in a platform, and the Democrat, who can not endorse it, ought to have a porous-plaster placed on his spine. With an aggressive-Jake-Kilrain-fight, the success of the National and Statu Democratic ticket is assured. "1 see you are being urged to enter the race for congress in this district". "Yes, the matter has been suggested, and my name . will be pi esented upon one condition, that is, that I have the earnest and undivided support of the delegation from Monroe. A chronic feud has grown up between the adherents of Cot Matson and Air, Cooper, and it seems that these two gentlemen, both of whom are my personal friends, and if either is nominated, shall have my cordial support, claim a kind of political mortgage on the district, and the mention of the name of any other candidate, raises a howl with the respective factions, that the new man is brought out to injure, or enhance their respective claims. If 1113- name goes before the convention, it will be because my friends think: I can be nominated and that my nomination will be to the interest of the democracy of the district. So far as I am concerned, I shall .represent no interest but my own, in the canvass. It may not be amiiss to say that the friends of Mr. Chase claim that in the last election, he had the support of five hundred Cooper-democrats, and the threat is made that should Cooper be again defeated, a republican will be elected. It may be presummed that with this bitter feeling existing, the Matson faction will retaliate, if their favorite, should be defeated. It seems to me that the question the democracy is interested in, is to get out the entire strength of tfhe party,aPHo do this some candidate should be selected who can poll the entire vote It will not be forgotten, that a congressional quarrel in a single district las1; election, lost us the state, and the hope of the enemy, in the coming campaign, is that enough internal trouble may occur to carry them through. The democracy ought to select as delegates a class patriotic conservative men, and leave the men with knives in their belts at home If it shall be thought best by my f riends for me to make an active canvass for the nomination I shall do so for the purpose of obtaining the nomination
?for myself and not for any one else,
