The house of Samuel Dinsmore, on his f arm West of town, was- destroyed byfire Tuesday - afternoon. The house' was unoccupied, but Mr. Dinsmore and his son had been doing some work on the farm and had been in the house at noon to cook their dinner. W hile at work in the field after dinner they discovered flames bursting through the roof. The fire was caused by a defective flue; The house was4nsured in the Home of New York.
Edwin Lee, whohas been foreman in the Telephone office for some time, has bought the Mitchell Commercial and will take charge at once. Mr. Lee is a faithful worker and he should receive the cordial support of all the citizens of Mitchell.
We have a law in this state which reads-thus: '"Whoever being over 14 years of age is found on the first (Jay of the week, commonly called Sunday, riding, hunting, fishing quarreling, at common labor or engaged in his usual vocations (works of charity and necessity only excepted) shall be fined in any sum not more than $10 or .less than $1." Through an oversight, the Courier failed to mention the retirement of Capt. W. M. Alexander feom the office of Auditor, a place he . has so faithfully and efficiently held for the past four years. Although radically aRepub'aican, politics. were never known in the administration of the affairs of his office -men of all parties being treated alike. Then Mr. Alexander deserves especial nention by this paper, for the reason that had he so chosen he could haye resigned a short time before the expiration of his term of office, and turned it over to the Grimes gang. But Mr. Alexander took the

The principle event of Thanksgiving week is the performances by the Graham Earle Dramatic Co. at the Opera House. Large audiences have been present every night, and plays were given in a manner that highly pleased! all. ' Mr; Graham Earle and his wife, Miss1 Agatha Sineton, are established favorites here. They need no br p ss band
and big street parade to draw. The
word has only to be passed around
that -the; Earles are feere and th at. in itself issufficient to fill the house every night. The secret of the success of the Earles it that as ver
satile artists they not only stand at
the head of their profession themselves, but they are supported by ladies and gentlemen of more than ordinary talent, besides the strictest attention is paid to mounting the plays, all the details in the way of scenery' and properties being attended to. The costumes are always. perfect, and, in many of ha plays, very handsome.,' Performances .wilhcontinue every night this week, and Saturday matinee. We can't say go and see the Earles because everybody h as wbeen and will continue to go as If ng as the company remains.
A Hunting Club has been organized here with Cal Worrall as President, and Ed Corr as Secretary. Thev following rules have been adopted: If you shoot at a bird and miss it don't blame the bird. It is not his fault. Never buy a large game bag. Be charitable. Other people have as much right to hunt as you, If you shoot a farmer's dog by mistake, don't, wait to explain matters. Farmers are powerfully strong as a rule. Never go nunting without a plentiful supply o snake bite antidote, Whiskey is the most popular remedy to date.
Has the Courier ever done you a
favor? Has it ever printed something thatvbenefitted or helped you especially ? L as it printed an adver
tisement or published some notice
for your 'gratis? Has it came to you every week whether your subscription was paid in advance or not? If
ilS has done any or all of these
uuugu, can cyou say a gopa wora for it some time and persuade somebody to take it who is not now a subscriber? 1 1 is pretty hard sometimes to return good for evil ; but almost an' soi t of a Ghrif tian ought to be willing to return good for good John Ronan, who was iveil known in this citr, met a horrible death in a railroad accident on the C. ifc O. railroad last week. Mr. Ronan was engineer cn a freight train between Louisville and Pad u can, and his train was wrecked and burnt. His bod3r was badly mangled, so much so it is said, that scarcely aaiy of his remains could be found. He had lately been married, and lived in Louisville. His parents reside near Clear Creek station in this county. Mr, Ronan was a young man who was highly esteemed b3r all who knew him. This is a double blow to his sister, who recently lost her husband by death. After this, when a Rloomiugton lady asks a gentleman to desists from smoking in the Bedford depot, she will be more explicit in her request or get an interpreter. Bloomington citizens can hardly get accustomed to this cosmopolitan town. When this lady spoke to the smoker of her aversion to the fumes of tobacco he, not understanding her, and thinking she was asking a loan of his pipe, took it from his mouth, cleaned it out, reached for his sack of tobacco, and very politely olfereil her a smoke. She has not yet recovered from the shock the goodnatured and well-meaning Italian gave here. Bedford Star.
