23CO3RATIC TO TH COKE.
Dip you 666 the President. Ths Democratic leaders are highly pleased with the prospects for 1388:
Pkesieent Clsvelanb and wife are beiag received in royal style id every city they visit. Mrs. Cleveland is gaining her share of tha favor while Grover is making friends and supporters at avesy point Boke republican organs which are still of the opinion that the repubikan party 3hould be given another lease of power upon its -past services and future promises we attackiag the third party movement with great vigor. They seem surprised 4bat should have lost ibeiribv3 nd respect lor the g. o. p. and that they should desire to organize new party.
They a?e. shocked at the idea that they should make war upon the rspublicaa patty. Shey don-t seem to realize iho fact that the people are getting tired of their attempt to ride into power on their past record and their present promises. The prohibitionists are making war ca the remains of the republican party in earnest, its foundation can't stand the shocks; it is beginning to crumble and each political storm brings it a little nearer-death. Plhk after plank has fc&an pited on the frame work (prejudices) until it is being crushed under their weight. The crew that has so faithfully manned the ship of republicanism for so many Jong years with longing expectations and anxious iopes, have at last routined and ao glittering gifts or guilded ffomises wl satisfy them. They
are determined .to leave the old sinking barge forever. Captain Blaine may cry Hum, Romanism and Rebellion, but the deserters are increasing and his ranks are gradually weakening.
Indianapolis Sentinel : High taxes place annually in the treasury of the United States $100,000,000, for which the government has no legitimate use. To take this money from the pocket of the people is robbery pure and simple. The demand is to reduce taxation until this surplus disappears, until robbery ceases. The blatherskites who, when the clem and is made to cease robbing the people, yawp "free trade," are the advocates of robbery. A Brazil special says : Ths "Louisville, New Albany and Chicago Ealleoad Company will, beyond doubt,it is said; build the purposed branch connecting their main line at Bainbridge in Putnam county, with the coal fields at Brazil. The route has been surveyed and the New York managers are reported as much pleased with the outlook. Soon after the purchase ot the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Eoad, the managers of the Chicago and Indiana Coal Bond, who had been going into Chicago over the Loaisville,New Albany and Chicago main track from Fair Oaks, now breach that place over their newly acquired track by the aid of the Big Four from Swannington to Momence. This cuts off from che Louisville, New Albany and Chicags Road much coal freightage and, no doubt, influenced considerably in the building of the projected branch. Once in operation it will make its projectors formidable competitors of the Chicago and Indiana Coal Road, which is now transporting to Chicago about 125 car loads daily. MATSON FOR GOVERNOR.
What time your correspondent has been at the Capital, and that is about ten days, I have seen representative Democrats from nearly every part of the State, and let mc make o prediction now. If Colonel C. C, jfat8on is "alive and well" ho will be the nominee. The Democrats are fully determined to win, and they are going to make no mistake, Cleveland, of course, will be tbo nominee for President, and much of dissatisfaction which I spoke of before is by some charged to Cleveland . I mean dissatisfaction arising from the fact of Rspubiicans being kept
in office, while a great many Demo-1

crats pntthe blame where it belongs on the Congressmen. Colonel Matson was the Grst Congressman in Indiana who could truthfully say, "There is not a Be publican holding a Federal appointment anywhere." Matson will be nominated for Governor, and then the good people oi that district will nominate Colonel Eb Henderson or Hon. George Cooper to take his place in Congress, either one of whom will make a Representative of whom the constituents may will be proud. They arc both good Democrats fromi4away back," and are hustlers, and if either one of them gets to Congress he will give Civil Service a black eye. And by the way, I have been somewhat surprised at the sameness of the answers that come from the Democrats when they are asked the question: "What do you think of Civil Service?" The answer given from the Wabash to the Ohio is "Civil Servivic be d d." Colonel Matson then, will head the ticket in Indiana next year, and in all probability the balance of the ticket of last year. The party generally feels that it was not the fault of the candidates that they were beaten, and are inclined to the opinion that they should, be vindicaU:d, which they feel will surely come before the Ides of November 1888. Cincinnati Enquirer. REV.S.L.BINKLEY OBITUARY.
Rev. S. L. Binkley was born at Tarlton, Pickaway county,Ohio.February 17, 1836, and died at Barnesville, Belmont county, Ohio, September 24,1887 being just 51 years, 7 months and 7 days old. Afterward he attended Garrett Biblical Institute one year, and then preached six months in the Southeastern Indiana Conference.
