The scheme of "booming" towns in the West is the principal work of a syndicate of Minneapolis capitalists. It is said that they are working Duluth and Wichita at the same time and by tilie same methods. They pick an obscure town with few natural resources, and, after one or two "wash" deals in real

Then the town falls back deader than ever, and the plotters go to another places In California the same thing is being done, but the papers of San Francisco have had the courage to; expose some of the humbugs. The desire of the people and papers of every town and city, to boom their localities, is very natural, but this thing can be carried too far. It often does harm, and invariably injures a )laee unless there is something to justify
this excessive horn blowing. If the
elaborate puffing of any town hap
pens to bring "an investor or eapl taiist witjiin its limits, he will fee disgjusted unless every word he has read can be sustained. Judicious advertising and conscientious hornblowing are good things, -boomer-ang, lying and ureasonable exaggerations are fatal to prcsperitr.

Columbus, Ikd., Railroad circles here were excited this evening by the receipt of a telegram by Harry Kurtz, from Mr. Maekey, to abandon the election in this township for voting a subsidy of 45,000 to the Evansville & Richmond railroad Tf hick was to have been held next Tuesday. The road had litany friends here, and was almost
a certainty that a subsidy would have carried. Mr. Curtz: went up to Indianapolis, as he said, to look up some records regarding the railroad. Mr. Mackey is in New York, and it looks as though he had either been bought or frightened out of the race. W. H. Aiisry, of Sullivan, President; P, II, Blue, of Sullivan, general manager, and Col. J.
