The following account of a Monroe county wedding is taken from the Martinsville Republican: Seeing an account of the big
weddings of Johns-Tucker and
McCord-Callis. reminds us of
some weddings in high life (up in the hills) down here. Fll endeavor to describe two or three, but prefer to keep the names out of print, for fear I might get a "Mansard" roof oyer my eye. Well a few mornings since a
justice was "waked up" by a
would-be groom and his "best man" and hired to take the two latter to Bloomington to get the necessary papers and bring them back and tie the knot. While in town they both got full of "corn juice" and could hardly be pur-
suaded or scared home, but good
counsel at last prevailed and a start was made, but when within
about two miles of the bride, the "best man'"' had to be left in the
buggy too limber for transpor
tationand the groom not much
better, the J. P. still trying to iret him there "Eli." But about
FT " ' ... -. . -. -., " this time a severe wind and rain
storm coming on, the J. 1
sought shelter at the house of a
farmer on the way, and - nigh
coining on, the winds still blowing and the rain falling in torrents, the darkness was so in
tense that he thought the wed
ding could be postponed til
morning. Moreover the groom
had escaped in the darkness
leaving the said J. P. iu a strange part of the country una-
bie to mm tne Driae or
any of her friends. Next morning, however, after about two hours' riding and search, they
were treed and married. The
groom couldn't get his boots on
and his pants being wet and his
"boilt" shirt spoiled, in the rain
and mud of the previous evening, he stood up bare-footed, wearing
a colored shirt and a pair of over
alls. After the ceremony breakfast was announced, and I don't
think I can command language enough to describe it fully, but
will try. In the first place they
had "chicken," and it was ap
parently the grandmother of all the "spring chickens," served in
the highest style of the art in a rusty looking bread pan, in
which it had been fried. Then
there was an old-fashioned corn
dodger and good strong coffee
without cream or sugar. After
ail were seated on stools, pieces
of chairs, boxes, etc., one of the
young lady attendants exclaimed : "By gosh, we ain't got any
ingerns," and jumping up, run out into the garden, brought in a handful roots, tops and all. As to dishes, etc., we made them do, the bride and groom drinking their coffee from one saucer, the J. P. getting about one-half a knife and a tin fork. forsa"le. We will open a first-elass ho

It is a fact pretty generally known by everybody, and espec
ially by those who have been candidates, that there are a great many dead beats in both parties in this county, and we think it
is high time steps were being
taken to shake them off. They
are a set of leeches belonging to both parties, who, every cam
paign year, are in the habit of
fleecing the candidates, and ev

of considerable sums of money. Some. do it by borrowing, while others come out boldly and tell

Plough" up liberally they (the dead beats and blackmailers) will spot them on the day of the

all candidates on both sides give
them the grand bounce when the next campaign comes on. A man who has to be hired to vote
