ij u i had recently made out of hie old lanyard building, in the Northeast part of the city. The house was occupied by an aged colored woman named Mrs. ttrktin, mother-in-law of Russell White, and the latter's children. Up staiis lived Ted Barnes and wife. Mrs. Brittin was an aged and paralytic woman and it is supposed that she got up and lighted a lamn and lire was either coram uni-
cated to her clothing or the bed clothes. The children were aroused by the cries of the old woman and they endeavored to drag her ont of
the building, but as they got near the door the flames became so hot that the3r dropped ifer and fled from the burning building to-save them
selves. The old wsraan lay there until the houBe burned down. Her body was burnt to a crisp, and the legs were entirely gone below the knees. It was a sickening sight to behold. Ted Barnes and wife' escaped as the flames were coming up through the floor, They lost everything. Very few things were saved down stairs. The remains ol Mrs. Brittin were taken to the house of Mrs. McAfee, and will be buried today (Friday.) She was 70 years of age. There was considerable delay
The following are some news
items from the North part of the county: Jesse Smith lost one of bis toes by an ax. A cold wave struck us Saturday night. The frost nipped some vegetables in the low grounds. Jasper Van cut himself badly ly with a broad-axe last week. The cut is across the knee-cap, cutting it in two, making a serious wound. Mrs, Golden, once a resident of our township, has moyed to Bloomington to school her children. She will take a few boarders I understand, and we can recommend her to the good people of Bloomington as a good took and a christian lady, worthy of their patronage and confidence. Married. David Yeo, of Paragon, to Miss Alice Lynch, of
this vicinity. This is curious,
isn't it ? The Yeo found a lamb
and the lamb found a Yeo, and
their offsprings are bound to be Yeos, no matter what the gender. Also, the "Baker" undertook to cook the Yeo and got cooked himselt. Mrs. Baker returned from Michigan last week, where she has been visiting her daughter, Sarah. Her daughter, Flora, accompanied her home. She has been in Michigan since last winter. 7
