The following pertinent conundrum is asked by the Washington Gazette: HViVsts ihft nronrietors of a

paper money to have the hoticos! get lip, and why one should ask to have the work done for nothing is more than a reasonable person can explain, rvo one would go into a dry goods store and ask the proprietor to give

him a yard of calico, a yard of muslin, a yard of silk, or some specific quanity of anything he may have to sell without ottering him remuneration for the same. Why, then, are newspaper men asked to insert resolutions, marriages notices, obituary notices, &c, which costs the publishers, in every instance, more than a yard of calico costs the merchant, free or the persons making the request will stop their support of the paper? The recent cyclone did much damage in Marion township which has not heretofore been reported. It destroyed a tine orchard and a barn for J. K. Sharpe, who lives on the old Stepp place. The old tannery

and mill, at 'Monroe Mills, had their roofs taken off and otherwise demolished. The old store building Was also destroyed. Large forest trees were snapped off as if they were mere cornstalks. Miles of fencing were destroyed and nearly every orchard tree in the neighborhood was mown down as if they had leen so many weeds. Mr. Sharpe is the heaviest loser. On June 7th, the 83d.. birthday of Elias Abel, a number of friends called upon him and were very nicely entertained by himself and his estimable lady. Those who were present were

Luke Ward (aged So) and '(daughter, Elizabeth Wampler (aged 78), Emmily Abel and child, Reuben Ward, (aged To) rotf James B. Pauley and wife, Axstia Beeves and wife, C. I Titley, 4 wife and daughter, John Ktefcam and wife of M.axtiusyilie, Garrison Pauley and wife. Of the sons, daughters and gfandchiidren of Mr. .Atat that set down to dinner, iw& were about 25 in number. All enjoyed themselves much, and hope to attend many more such anniversaries.

Elder Treat will hold a meeting at Maple Grove on June 23 and 24. All are invited.

It was agreed unanimously that the first and second bondsmen act as a unit. After consider

IN MEMORIUiU It becomes our painful duty to record the death of Mrs. Fannie Spicer Swift, daughter of Mr. Spicer, the popular and well known sexton of the University, who died June 10, at the age of 28 years, 10 months and 20 days. Mrs. Swift has been a resident oi our city since four years of age, and was known among us in her childhood, girlhood and womanhood, as one gifted with many charms of character. She united with the M. E. church, under the ministry of Dr. Webb, in 1S79, and professed religian during the revival led by the evanglist Mrs. Robinson. At the same altar where her body lay confined, and where she found the blessed Savior, she was united in marrage to her now bereaved busland, Mr, Swift, April I8th, 1881. A little over two years ago, as spring time was bringing forth its flowers, she was a joyous and lnippy bride. Now the faring

tune has passed and just as the foliage puts on its richest hues, and the birds sing their most delightful songs, during commencement chimes, she is called a way. During the past six months Mrs. Swift was a great suflerrer, but especially so during the past few weeks. Life lost its charms to her, and she longed to be set free. She was ready and calmly trusting, she fell asleep in Jesus. The rememberance or her meek and quiet yet cheerful spirit lingers as a blessed heirloom to husband, father, mother, brothers and sisters. The thought of one so beloved renders heaven more attractive.

The ilcEinney Defalcation. The fact that L. E. McKinuey, county treasurer, is a defaulter spread rapidly throughout the county 'and on last Saturday n larc crowd in town excitedly discussed the matter. Nearly everyone expressed opinions that the bondsmen would never pay the amount of t he defalcation, and recent developements show that those opinions were not without fundation. This is not a matter that can he settled by the denunciation ofMeKinnev. Whether or not he is indieted by the next grami jury and prosecuted, his remorse of conscience is a large load for him to carry. The matter is now down to the simple proposition as to whether the bondsmen or the tax-payers are to make good this loss to the county. It will be pretty hard at least for the Democratic portiou of the taxpayers to return to the treasury noney a large portion of which was used to defeat the democratic ticket, a fact that McKinuey himself acknowledges. The meeting of the bondsmen was held last Moiid&y. Nearly all of them were present. The Court-house bell was rung to call them together, there being

respectable mass meeting of the citizens. After deliberating about an lour, a proposition was sent to the Commissioners. To a man up a tree, it would seem as if there could only be one proposition in this matter, and that

is for the bondsmeu to pay off

the defalcation in full. But although the matter was kept a secret, a Courier reporter found out that the proposition was that the bondsmen would pay 5,000,

about one hall ot the amount of

the defalcation after McKinuey makes good all he can by turning over his property. The Commissioners rejected the proposition, on the grounds that there was no law to authorize them to take such a step. That settles

the natter for the present, audit is understood that the bondsmen will light the tt.ing, as they have employed as attorneys, East & East, and Buskirk and Dnncan. Louden & Micrs will represent the "county. One of the points on which the fight will be made is that the lirst bond is defective, and no good. Another point is, the Commissioners should have made McKinuey settle, and show up the money to balance, at the end of his first term. Mclviiiney is still in the county treasurer's office, going through his books, lie promises to write a statement of the matter for the press, also to expose the corrupt manner in which the campaigns in this county have been conducted.
